[xj-s] front and rear brake upgrade

hello,
I am looking for more ‘‘stopping power’’ on my '89 XJS and
want to upgrade my front and rear brakes.

present brake configuration:
rear brakes = stock
front = Brembo slotted rotors, ferrodo pads, stock calipers

I would like some recommendations on specific brands
XJS owners have installed and sources.

You can email me directly with your response.

Brendan

Brendan,

I track an '88 and upgraded my brakes last year to 10" rotors in the front
with new calipers. It isn’t cheap, but stops like a dream. They are AP and I
got the kit from Bob at V12 Sales, nice guy. I also got vented rotors for
the rears with the necessary spacers. This has helped to dissapate the heat
that builds up back there.

Another route at first for you may be to forgo the Forrido pads and try
Carbotech pads. I had used their Panther Plus formula on the fronts and
rears and they worked great. They too aren’t cheap, but may last you longer
on the road then mine did on the track. Once bedded properly, they will stop
your car much beter than the OEM’s and last longer. The only downside,
besides price, is that the fronts will dirty your wheels. Nature of the
beast I’m afraid. But if you clean your car on a regualr basis, it
shouldn’t be too much of an issue for you.

I am now going to the Panther XPs in front and keeping the Panter Pluses in
the rear. I use Motul 600 racing fluid, but wouldn’t recommend that for you
for reasons of cost and need. Speaking of which, have you followed the
rrecent thread on brake bleeding?

My bad. I meant 13" front rotors and calipers by AP.

Hello, is this the same Charles who sold me the small delrin
bushings for my rear radius arms last year?

I bought 18’’ BBS rims from V12 sales last year, so I will
email him about the AP calipers/kit, etc. I believe Dick
Maury from Coventry uses the same setup on the his '83 XJS.
Where did you source your rear brake upgrade kit and the
Carbotech pads? I could try these pads first before I make
a major upgrade. I have to drop my rear to install the
Keisler anti-sway bar so do you recommend I just upgrade the
rotors versus just upgrading pads?

Hey Brendan, yes it’s the same Charles. How are the bushings doing?
We’ve got a few more sets left irf you know anyone may wnat them.
Iu know your’s will last for years…

I think I got the rear set-up from Bob also. He supplied the vented
discs and the spacers.

You can get the Carbotech pads directly from them at

I’d start with the pads first and see how that does. Then if you
really need to stop, go with the new front rotors, but paln on
spending over $1K.

Let me know if you need any additional info.
