[xj-s] Front brake job is going great but have 1 big question

In reply to a message from Daniel Cusick sent Mon 2 May 2005:

If the last time I did the brakes I didn’t install the shim and I
had an alignment done after with this bottom bolt tightened, could
this cause a pulse back and forth?

Other than relieve the stress in the steering lever, what do shims
do? Could lack of shims cause a vibration?

Just to let you know, any where there was surface to surface
contact, I sanded it and cleaned away any debri. This includes
rotor-hub, steering lever-calliper, calliper-what it bolts to, tire-
hub, brake pads.
When re-installing bearings, I re-greased them, Torqued bolt to 22
ft-lbs, rotated rotors a couple times, re-torqued to 20 ft-lbs,
loosened off bolt and re-torqued to 3 ft-lbs.–

Hi Chris,

Been a week or so since I replied last. I did catch up on your
posting and work to date.

  1. You had the rotors turned and new pads installed. No change in
the steering wheel shake upon braking.

  2. IIRC, you have ABS…but no lights indicating malfunction, even
though the ABS will only activate during a wheel ‘‘lockup’’ upon hard
    or emergency braking.

  3. New or reman rack and pinion on the way.

  4. The ‘‘shim thing’’. I don’t think that could produce your
steering ‘‘jerking upon braking’’ problem. Might cause a pull to left
or right due to alignment, but not a jerky wheel when braking…
    but certainly needs attention.

  5. I don’t see how a seized caliper piston could either. Seems
like that would produce a constant ‘‘pull’’ to the opposite side, as
opposed to a rapid back and forth jerking of the wheel. If it’s
    seized…it’s seized.

  6. You had the ‘‘front end’’ checked and the result was ‘‘tight’’ ???

  7. Tire tread wear (which you don’t have), or internal separation
of tire, would be there with or without braking.

  8. Continues to ‘‘smell’’ like front end to me. Ball joints, tie
rods, etc., maybe even a remote possibility of bad shocks.

  9. Suggest you get a ‘‘second opinion’’ on the condition of front end
    components.

Hope this helps.

For what it is worth. I to experienced the steering shake syndrome
some time ago and whilst I have missed most of what has been going
on in this thread, would make the following comment.

Please check your pads again! Sometime Following a pad replacement
I began to notice my steering was vibrating under braking. After
checking I found they had been running hot to the extent my discs
were scorched. Fortunately no damage. I then changed the pads again
and all is now well.

Thanks for your input guys.
Am in the middle of a tear down and can’t check brakes right now.
New heater core, cam cover and intake gaskets, oil pan and sandwich
plate gaskets and RB Rack & poinion and HP hose. Hopefully once
new rack is in, after alignment, problem will be gone. Will keep
you posted.

Thanks again,
Chris–
