[xj-s] Fuel smells

This one’s confusing me. Can smell fuel when driving, but only when sunroof
or windows are open. No smell at all in the cabin with windows shut, no
smell in trunk/boot. No smell in engine compartment, no smell outside when
parked, no puddle of gas under car.

Ideas?

Andy,

Have the same smell on my V12… only fuel odor I have found when parked
is a vague odor coming from behind the left rear wheel… I guess it’s
the fuel return line, but I am unable to locate the precise origin.

Dunno if the smell I get at the window is from this location though…

My best guess is that your cabin is isolated from the smell (outside) when
you run the wind past the open window/sunroof the turbulence at the
boundary sucks some of it in. Do you smell it with the windows down at a stop?
The sunroof down at stop?

Nope. Only when moving. Suspect some kind of fuel tank breather glitch
when excess fuel is dumped back in the tank under pressure. The airflow
over the rear window is upwards when the car’s moving so I guess any
venting from underneath could get whipped over the top of the car and
into the sunroof.
Maybe I’m not driving fast enough?-----Original Message-----

Andrew - I am of the impression that the problem you may be having is a bad
valve in the fuel vapor canistor circuit. This would allow excess fumes to
be emitted to atmosphere. Have you tried testing to see if you are also
smelling the fumes when having the car at a standstill, in your driveway,
but with the engine running at cruise rpms instead of at idle rpms (since
you stated earliar that you do not smell the fumes when at a stop)?

I would check my engine compartment for leaky injector hose and any other
problems. My smell comes from the trunk, yours could still come from there.
I have no smell inside the passenger compartment.

Dennis.

Sorry, I’ve not been folliowng this thread, so I don’t know if this has been
mentioned already, but if you have a fuel smell in the boot (that’s the REAL
name for the “trunk” as you call it!!! :)) have you removed the carpet
that hangs between the spare wheel and the fuel tank? When I looked at my
tank, I could see that one or two of the places where the internal baffles
are fixed to the tank case are weeping, and I also have a fuel smell in the
boot.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

Almost on topic - I’m looking for a used XJR (the AJ16 supercharged one,
not the V8) Anyone got any suggestions on potential faults I should be
looking for?
