[xj-s] fuel tank sender

The fuel tank sending unit in my 1994 4.0 is misbehaving. I
bought a new one�.it came in yesterday and before I installed
it, I removed the two connectors and put a jumper wire between
them. The gauge went to full.

I then connected the wires to the new sending unit out of the
tank and physically moved the float to max. position. The gauge
needle read just over �. I replaced the old sender with the new
one and the gauge reads empty.

On the trip to the gas station the gauge read a little less
than �. This seems reasonable since the level was just below
the sender hole in the tank. But after I added 3 gallons of
fuel and restarted the car the gauge reads empty.

I removed the connections from the sender in the tank and
hooked them up to the old sender out of the tank and pushed the
float to max position and the gauge reads � again. Yikes…What
gives???–

The sender in my 94 doe the same thing. I just live with
it reading 3/4 full when full.

The anti-slosh module fails as often as the sender unit.
It is located in the left side panel in the boot and looks
like a very tall relay.–

I think this is why it is important to diagnose the problem
fully before replacing any parts.

As John has said, the usual cause of low fuel gauge readings
on facelift XJS is deterioration of the anti-slosh module
with ‘‘leakage’’ of the capacitors.

Remove the module from its holder. It’s possible, if a
little difficult to do this in situ. Then, by reference to
the workshop manual electrical diagram, put a short bridge
piece of wire between the sender input voltage terminal of
the holder and the gauge output voltage terminal of the
holder. If the gauge now reads correctly, and remains
reading correctly as the tank level lowers then you have
diagnosed that the module is at fault.

You will see from the elec diagram that the module also
provides the output signal for the low fuel light. So
remember that with the module disconnected, you will have no
low fuel warning.
