I like to call “Burn and Coast” - similar to the Space Shuttle.
This technique is where you use Full Throttle (Booster Ignition) to achieve the
desired
maximum speed (Escape Velocity) and then cut the throttle (MECO - Main Engine
Cut Off)
when you reach your destination (Orbit). In using full throttle duringYou are correct, sir.
If you ever have are down to fumes and need to get the most mpg, here’s
the most efficient driving technique (works best in a manual car because
you can stay in high gear):Start the engine with full throttle, in high gear, foot to the floor.
Accelerate up to some speed fast enough to have some inertia behind you
but slower than the point where there is too much aerodynamic drag (maybe
50 mph). Declutch, shut off the engine, and coast down to a few mph.
Repeat. You’ll achieve the highest mpg your car is capable of achieving.
This is exactly the technique that drivers competing in the old
(1950-60s?) Mobil Economy Run used to get enormous mileages. My aging
memory seems to recall that they would accelerate to something like
30-35 mph and then coast to a near stop before repeating. I don’t
remember the mileage numbers but they would sometimes get into three
figures, i.e. 100+ mpg!
Of course, they used all kinds of other tricks, like inflating tires to
ultra-high pressures and running WD40 in the wheel bearings, etc.
Can you imagine driving 1000+ plus miles using these techniques? Not me
. . .
