[xj-s] Growling Fuel Pump.'93 4.0 Convertible

The XJS developed a growling from the trunk on twisty roads in the
mountains at 9,000 feet altitude. The sound was such that I thought
it was from the diesel engine of a pickup truck behind me but it
continued after the truck was gone.

After sitting for an hour the sound resumed as I continued my
drive, getting no louder or softer.

There was no loss of power or other symptoms (like flames leaping
out of the trunk!)

Because it is a Jaguar of course the next day the sound was gone!

Is this a warning sound from the car that it wants a new Fuel pump
( after 120,000 miles?) or just ‘‘one of those things…’’?–

Paul,

I agree with your thought it’s the fuel pump. Should be easy to check when making noise. When holding the pump you should feel the sound vibration.

Ok, hold the tank or press your ear up to it!

Thanks for catching my error.
