[xj-s] How to de-pressurize the fuel system, 1990 XJS V12? {Scanned}

I plan to replace a fuel hose in my 1990 XJS this weekend. I need to know
how to depressurize the fuel system prior to removing the hose. In my XJ6
I removed the fuel relay and then cranked the engine to do depressurize the
fuel system. Is this the correct procedure for the XJS V12? I have
ordered a manual, but I don’t expect to see that until next week.

Start the car, rev it up a little and then pull the fuel pump
relay. Injectors will fire until there’s insufficient pressure to do more
than dribble. I’d still exercise caution when opening the lines (have some
cloth rags on hand).

Where exactly is the fuel pump relay located in a 1990 XJS? I have some
pubs on order but they won’t get here until next week. I’d like to replace
this cracked hose today so that I can drive the car again. I checked
around the engine bay, but couldn’t identify the fuel pump relay. I
believe it may be one of the relays in the boot. But which one? I could
try “eenee meenee minee moe” but I’d rather not.

The 12 cylinder section of my XJ6/12 ROM shows the fuel pump relay (page

19-4 and 19-5) in the engine bay. It also shows four wires, N (Brown), KB
(Pink Black), O (Orange), NS (Brown Slate (Gray) going to it. I will start
looking around in the boot for a similar relay with these wires and try
that. If anyone knows the exact location of the fuel pump relay please let
me know.

Your help is appreciated.

Open the boot. Locate the battery. Note plastic shield which is part of
the boot liner just to the outboard side of the battery. Remove that. You
should see a relay mount with a coupld of relay devices and a larger box on it.

The forwardmost one (closest to the engine) is the pump relay, and the one
right behind that is the main relay. The really big box thing is the fuel
interface.

If you’ve got a laminate label printer, it might be handy to print labels
to stick on top of a few of the relays.

I find that lifting the fuel cut out inertia switch while cranking the
engine works in relieving fuel pressure. But don’t forget to reset the
switch after you’ve finished with the fuel system!

If you remove the spare, you can just unplug the fuel pump with the engine
running to depressurize.
