I need to remove the steering wheel from my XJS. The steering column was
improperly assembled at the factory, now it is right, and the wheel is
crooked.
Took the car to the dealer and they want $100 US just to take the wheel off
and put it back on straight. Cheating bastards.
I would do it myself except that Chad Bolles says ypu must have a special tool
to get the front plastic thing off which has the airbag in it. I can’t find
the tool anywhere. Does anyone know how to do this SAFELY with out the tool,
or a makeshift tool.
Please help, my car is running great except the stering wheel being crooked is
really annoying me. Just once I would like to have everything right with the
car all at the same time. Thanks,
Julian Mullaney
I had a look in the 1990 onwards workshop manual last night and I
guess the following applies to your car:-
Turn the steering wheel (SW) through 90 degrees from straight ahead
and, working on the rear of the SW, prise off the cover to one of the
retaining bolts. Undo bolt. Spin the SW through 180 degrees and do the
same the other side. Put the SW back to central position.
You should also see a cover on the back of the SW. Prise it open to
get to the arming mechanism. The manual then says to use special tool
JD159 to unscrew (anti-clockwise) the arming pin. From the picture the
pin looks like a grub screw with a blob on top. It is unclear from the
diagram but the blob looks either square or hexagonal. The special
tool is just an adapter bit for a screwdriver. I would have though
once you have an idea what shape and size the bit needs to be you may
be able to find a normal socket that fits.
Anyway, turn the pin approx 12 turns anti-clockwise. Then slide an
access cover across to reveal the last mounting bolt. The manual says
once you have slid the access cover open you can screw the arming pin
in a couple of turns to hold the cover in position. All you need to do
now is undo that last mounting bolt and the bag should be removable.
The manual recommends putting the bag in a locked cabinet!
Re-assembly is the reverse of the above. :)
I should stress that I have not done this myself but I hope this
helps.

I know I’m a bit late to the party but I managed to grip the pin with a pair of locking needle nose pliers. The pin is a D shape and isn’t very tight. A metal tube the correct diameter crushed on one side should work also.
