[xj-s] I posted before, but really need some help.Vacuum Leak 89 XJS

I posted this before, but need some more responses. THis car was
pulled down for a head job about 15 months ago & has been driven
about 1100 miles & the idle is now higher. The idle was high when
it came back. Never had been high before. This bunch kept it a yr.
I do not want to take it back if poissible.Lowest it ides in drive
is 1000 to 1200 RPMS. It is 1500 to 1800 in park. I pulled AAV
Valve. I cleaned it & boiled it on stove. The piston goes all the
way down, except for just a hair when cold. When hot it goes up &
leaves a small gap where the housing starts narrowing. I assume it
should not close all the way. No change when reinstalled. I have
clamped vacuum lines & checked all the hose I can see on top. Are
there other hoses underneath the air filter housings that need to
be checked by removing the covers & air filters? I have not checked
for a manifold leak. Do I do this by spraying WD-40 along the edges
of the manifold in the center of the engine?
1.Am I checking the AAV Valve correctly?
2.How did you solve your high idle problems?
3. I know there is a vacuum leak when I step down on the gas, as
the air stops blowing out the A/C vents. Let off & it comes back.
Can this be a related problem & where do I look to solve this?
4.Can this vacuum leak, if it is at MANIFOLD CAUSE ANOTHER VALVE
SEAT TO DROP?
5.I need any advice here I can get & appreciate youir responses.I
try to send money to support the Board & need as much help as I can
get.
I know I am a pain, but I really need help here.
Thanks in advance. Ron–

Just a shot in the dark, but when I put mine back together I forgot
to put the gaskets between the throttle bodies and the intake
manifolds. You might be able to pinpoint the leak by putting the
end of a piece of hose to your ear and running the other end around
the intake path and any vacuum related hoses and accessories. Or
just start plugging ports with caps and see if you can find it, and
I’ve heard of using a propane torch, not lit of course, turned down
to a low flow and running it around the engine until rpm
increases. Haven’t done the propane thing before, usually just get
down close to engine and listen for leaks.–

Ron,

It sounds as if there are NUMEROUS areas you haven’t as yet checked for loose/broken vacuum lines. Indeed you do need to pull your air cleaner housings in order to see all the numerous vac outlets on the bottom of the intake manifolds. Once all those are properly reconnected, be sure to check the vac line that attaches to the bottom of your cruise control bellows.

Best of luck with your quest.

There is a large one under the A bank T body (right side from
drivers seat)to feed the A/C idle up solenoid>

check the throttle bodies. The linkage was disturbed with
the head gasket, and may not have been set properly. If the
clearance is greater than the recommended .002 on each
side…you will never have proper idle. Kirby’s book has a
good write up on the method.–

Did you change the AAV at some point? I understand they have
different part numbers.I don’t know the difference. I know they
work like a thermostat (ie: 180 vs 195)
I wrote this same reply in the thread ‘‘Junkyards Finds’’ down
this page if you want too read it.

Not really wanting to state the obvious but I don’t recall seeing it
specifically referred
to; you have tried adjusting the idle speed using the bolt on the side
of the AAV
haven’t you? =-O

More on the throttle bodies… make sure all four bolts that hold
each airbox on are present and tight. Nevermind about how I know
this

After you check all the vac lines look around your intake manifolds.
Mine acted just like yours, I found that the left intake gasket had
failed and developed a major vacuum leak. Tehy may have not
installed the gasket correctly.–
