[xj-s] If Not One Thing

If not one thing, then it’s another! Did you ever have this sort of
coincidence occur?
The clip for the driver’s side sun visor broke (OK, the car is
13 years old…things break). I thought the driver’s visor was
probably used the most. But, the very next day, while driving down
the street the passenger side sun visor clip also broke!
Fortunately, these are readily available through on-line
suppliers for a couple dollars each so the repair was no big
deal.
But how strange that one would go right after the other…Is
there a ghost in the machine?!–

One of mine broke and when I saw them being sold on ebay I figured
they must be made of crappy material so I ordered two and sure
enough the other one broke a month or so latter. I hope the new
ones hold up better.–

They’re equally as cheap at the dealer parts counter, if you’ve a local
dealership.

Paul,

Perhaps it’s that they are both exposed to the sun in equal amounts.
The sun (it’s the ultraviolet as I recall) attacks all plastics,
breaking the molecular bonds or something.

They’re plastic. They don’t like heat or sunlight. Since both clips
are exposed to the same heat and sunlight, it makes sense that they
both crap out at about the same time.

I hope the new ones hold up
better.

They won’t.

Somebody…Sean?..has a write-up on modifying these little devils to
make them unbreakable. Being lazy I just order a new one every few years and
call it good.

As Jag stuff goes this is definitely small potatoes

After going through three or four I found that putting a small flat
washer inside then the screw it takes the pressure off the plastic
and so far going on a year and half no more broken. Don’t know the
size washer just took the part to the store and looked for a washer
that would go in flat at the bottom.

Gee, is it breaking around the screw? I thought you guys would be
breaking it in the clip part.

I faintly recall doing something here with my '83. I’m pretty sure I
had to replace the clips, they were probably broken. But what I
remember most was that, after having a local shop replace my
headliner, I couldn’t get the visors into the clips without serious
cramming. I ended up making little spacers for the clips to hold
them 1/4" or so farther away from the roof so the visors would snap
into them more readily. But I think all that was just because the
headliner replacement wasn’t as good as it should have been.

`77 XJ-S

As many of you might remember, I had a wire melt down on the dizzy wire
in the engine bay that caused me to have to re-wire my XJ-S. I brought
all fresh wire, soldered and heat shrink tubed back through the fender
well, to the block. Finally got everything done that far today. In the
middle of this, rebuilt the suspension (fr) and installed an electric
fan set up. All is done to this point.

Here is the urgent issue.

On the block in the passenger side kick well, there are a place for
three mate-n-plugs to plug into the connection block. On the back side
of the connection block are the same cooresponding mate-n-plugs, 1-2-3
marked. There is where the new wires stop (my new work). The #3
mate-n-plug position both front and back are not used on my car. The #2
mate-n-plug from the mounting block to the internal side is not showing
any damage at all. So I am not going to mess with that one.

BUT, the #1 mate-n-plug is the one that contains the dizzy circuit. The
white w/blue spiral tracer is the one that is (was) damaged throug out
the engine bay, causing collateral damage out there. From the #1
mate-n-plug to the internal connections, at least for the first couple
inches, I can see melted wire case on the dizzy wire, and maybe
collaterial damage to the other wires.

I am either a few minutes away from finally firing up this car; OR
another week of tearing things apart and re-wiring. Beyond the
frustration, there is major excitement about driving it again.

If there is no serious collaterial damage, then I just have one wire to
replace, the DIZZY wire from the #1 position on the block to where ever
it connects. I can not tell from my Haynes where that is, but presuming
that it terminates on the harness from the ignition switch. DOES THIS
WHITE W/BLUE SPIRAL TRACER CONNECT ANYWHERE ELSE INBETWEEN THAT #1 PLUG
AND THE IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS? If not, then I can just bypass the bad
wire and I can be on the road tomorrow!!!
If it does connect anywhere, then I guess I am destined to tear the dash
apart, as the wire bundle goes up and above and in the dash where only
gremlins go.

I have to presume that since almost everything like this is almost
always interchangeable, that any S2 XJ will have the same configuration
from the block to where ever that harness terminates.

DONE!
The cute little thing fired this evening, and everything is in order. I
AM ROAD WORTHY AGAIN!

Found that the wire (white, not white with blue spiral) was only damaged
about 2" up the bundle. From there on out, it was pristine, still
covered in the English version of electrical tape. Cut, cleaned,
soldered and heat shrinked the puppy and put it all together.

First time, after 7 months plus, she fired.

Going to go over things tomorrow and button everything down, run it
around the neighborhood to make sure things are in order and, … well,
… there is one happy soul in Arizona this evening.

Want to thank all of you [everyone] that contributed thoughts,
procedures and technical advice. THE LIST IS TOPS!

Hey Folks!
Taking off shocks, got curious. What is that steel half moon loop
bracket thing that attaches on the bottom bolt and points to the rear?
Seen this on every Jag I have owned and have always been curious.
