[xj-s] Instrument cluster lights and speedometer failture..

Hi, thanks for help in my other topik about steering rach
removal , fixed it.

Speedometer, tacho and side light indicators do not work on
my xjs 1988.

Removed the instrument cluster , checked connections= seemed
ok, bulbs ok, is there any fuses for speedo, tacho, lights ?

The turn lights works , only indicators in cluster do not
work.–

I’ll be keeping an eye out for answers to this, as well. I finally
got to drive my '88 XJ-SC at night last night, and after I found
out where the dimmer knob was under the dash (I fumbled and found
something, only to have the fuse door fall in the floorboard while
I was driving), I had lights on the fuel, battery, temp gauges, but
none on the speedo and tach. Also, no bright headlight indicator
(and perhaps others like it) working.

I’ve got so much that has to be done, these minor inconveniences
are way down my list, but I’ll come to these eventually.–

Guys,
This could be down to a few things. Firstly add another ground wire
to the back of the instrument cluster from under the dash of the
cars frame as the factory fitted ground is weak. Although the bulbs
work in the cluster, they are covered with a green shield inside
the cluster that gives the instruments their green glow. Over time
these shields turn black giving the illusion the bulbs are out.
What I did to fix this in the few XJSs I’ve owned is remove the
shields all together, and fit green bulbs.voilagreen
illumination.

If all the above doesnt work there is a 2amp fuse under the center
console ski slope. Its a pain in the a*se to get to but if this is
blown…it also knocks the cluster lights and gauges out.

Hope this helps–

Interesting. As I am about to redo my entire interior, including
the center console array leather and wood veneer (also replacing
unneeded ash trays with much needed cup holders), I wonder if I
should fabricate an access door or even move any fuses under the
ski slope into the center console storage bin for easy access? I’m
already planning to route an iPod cable from the back of my new
stereo to the center storage bin where I can attach my iPhone while
driving.

Anyone wanna chime in with an opinion on this one?–
