[xj-s] Intermittent coolant warning light

It’s coming on when I brake and when I go over bumpy ground, but
goes away when I accelerate from a standstill. Sometimes it comes
on when I turn as well.

Do I just need to top up the coolant? What should I use? Thanks.–

Captain,

Low coolant comes to mind firstly.

If you dont know whats in it, dont add just any old coolant, as
comtaminated coolant is a real PIA. Top it up with water, it should
not need any more than 1/2 a litre if the light is flickering. Once
you have eliminated the light, and are satisfied, then a coolant
change will be in order, then you know whats in it.

Mixing coolants ‘‘can’’ cause a sludge goo to form and this blocks
everything, so water as a top off is best at the moment.

OK Grant, thanks, I imagine it won’t do any harm. Do you think it’s
strange how the light only comes on when braking/turning/going over
bumpy surfaces or would you say this is not an electrical fault? I
suppose filling up the coolant would tell me, but with all the
other electrical gremlins in the car I wouldn’t be surprised.–

This happpens to my 95 4.0l also. It does not take much of a drop
in level to set this off, I often can not belive it is low looking
into the holding tank ,but it is enough to set the light off.–

This is embarassing, but I went to fill the coolant up and I can’t
find where to put it! There is a reservoir for the air conditioning
mentioning freon, and I checked but I can’t find the one for the
coolant to put some water in it…where should it be?–

Without being funny, is your car a 6 or a 12 ? If it is a 6, it is
on the passenger side under the hood.It is black and about half the
size of a shoe box.–

Best not to top up with water, as you’re diluting what could
already be depleted coolant. There are hybrid OAT coolants
like this one that are compatible with both the older and
newer OAT-based (aka Dexcool) coolants, and should not lead
to sludging.

BTW, if you don’t know that the coolant was changed in the
last 2 years, it’s time to do it anyway. At the same time
check around for any sign of leaking hoses and fix those -
this was the cause of my need to top-up now and then.–

I had the same problem with my car. The low coolant light kept
flashing on and off while driving on rough roads. The problem was
that the sensor wasn’t pushed all the way into the tank. The sensor
is held in place into a rubber gromet and mine had worked its way
part way out. Try pushing it in all the way and see if this cures
your problem.–
