[xj-s] Jaguar/Viper

Bradley,

Wow!

Tell me, what is a “crate motor?” I suspect it means it came in a crate
directly
from Mopar instead of out of a vehicle, right?

BTW, technically it’s a “crate engine,” though. At least in my training “motor”
is reserved for electric
motors, pneumatic motors, etc., where there is no combustion. But no matter
what you call
it, it should be a beast!

It’s unfortunate that he didn’t build the whole engine. He does great work.

I’d kinda like to have the parts he threw away! I’d MUCH rather have
a Viper with a Jaguar V12 engine in it!

No updates since April 16th? Seems odd. I wonder if they ran into any
fitment problems?

And I’d much rather have an XJ-S with a Jaguar V12 engine in it. Oh
wait, I do!! Silly me. For a Viper I’d want the Viper engine
mainly because it’s simply more powerful than the Jaguar engine. In a
Jaguar it’s an interesting idea, but wholly impractical. Then again
it seems these people aren’t too concerned with practicality, nor is
the market they’re aiming towards.

For the record, the Viper is a monstrosity of a car, unergonomic and
unenjoyable to drive from every aspect except for the acceleration,
so says everyone I’ve talked to who’s driven one (~5 people). I say
that an XJ-S that’s properly set up will outhandle and outbrake a
Viper. As for outaccelerate, Bradley’s car would be up to the task.
 I’m personally close to the outhandling phase, but the outbraking
and outaccelerating are a ways off.

On the issue of outbraking, here’s a question for everyone. The stock
XJ-S brakes certainly very good. My car with fresh rotors, calipers,
pads (EBC Green Stuff… NAYYY), lines, and properly bled will stop
on a dime. I’ve never used its full braking capability and once it
stopped so hard that the oil pressure dropped! Now, what would be a
cost-effective way to upgrade this? I’ve been thinking about it and
wondering how feasible it would be to bolt on rotors designed for a
Corvette? Obviously the calipers would also have to be Corvette
calipers matched to the application, and that would probably require
some adapting, but I wonder how much? Other than the fact that the
rotors bolt to the back of the hub instead of the front (which may
actually be an advantage since you wouldn’t have to deal with the
annoying oversized Jaguar hub in the center, just the minuscule stub
axle), how feasible would this be? And, as a follow-up, would anyone
happen to have some Corvette brakes lying around that I could buy off
of them to test this theory? The main obstruction I can think of
(literally) would be the possibility of the rims being too small for
the brakes to fit internally, but I’m planning on putting on a set of
17" rims anyway, which up until very recently has been the stock size
for Corvettes. Thoughts?–
