[xj-s] Keeping the R12 system

After reading all the comments about converting from a R12 to a R134
system, I think I’ll stick with the R12. But I have a few more
questions…

How available is R12? such as, will I have to special order it from some
unknown company? After sitting for over 6 years, what’s the chance of the
system not working to the point of replacing? What part of the system
should have stopped working first, if any of it did stop.

Here in the Phoenix area R-12 is available at AutoZone, Checker and other
parts houses. It is also available on the black market (smuggled in from
Mexico) at about $10 a can. I found this in the classified ads of the local
newspaper. Guy claimed he didn’t know it was a no-no to bring it into the
US (grin).

The most likely thing is that the compressor seal has dried out and you
will leak freon. When the freon charge drops below a certain pressure the
low pressure switch will disable the compressor to prevent damage to it. A
good compressor can be resealed, but with a rebuilt compressor so cheap I
would just replace it, if the seal is bad.

It is also possible one or more of the ‘O’ ring seals will leak, with the
same results

Be very careful about what you put into your A/C system, particularly
“black market R12 smuggled from Mexico!”

There are unscrupulous types out there selling Propane (!) and Butane (!)
as substitutes for R12 under various names. They work, but the
consequences of a leak or an accident while charging are horrendous.
