[xj-s] Keys Interchangeable?

I would like an OEM replacement key for my 1996 XJS. I
realize I need part # JLM1950, however would HNA7230AA1 or
HJD7230AA1 work as well?

I cut the following out of another site:

JLM 1950 for '90-'97 cars
HNA 7230AA1 for '98-'99 cars [immobilizer system]
HJD 7230AA1 for '00-'03 cars [rolling code system]

These keys all look identical but are not the same.

JLM 1950 has no programming pellet at all.
The other two each have pellets, but are NOT compatible.
Once a key is cut, [correctly that is] it will open the door
and will turn the ignition on, but will not start the car
until programmed to the vehicle. This is where people get
into trouble, they order a key and have no idea which part
number it is. Then if they have it cut and attempt to have
it programmed, it fails, and the inexperienced don’t know
why. I have run into trouble with keys straight from Jaguar
[I’m at a dealer] being mis-packaged; it’s a pain.

SInce I don’t need the chip in the key, getting any of the
three would work fine, wouldn’t it?–

I know you posted this 10 years ago , I was wondering the same thing . did you find any answers to your question?

I don’t believe I ever did find out.

I doubt any XJS uses the last PN, as they came after the last XJS went out the line (1996)

if your car (as mine) as no use for the security chip, then only the blade is used / needed
as there’s no difference by look, all 3 should work fine for this

I choose the easy way, and order a new key, letting the cutter source the blank :innocent:

At some point the keys did expand from a six cut combination, to an eight cut combination. That 8-cut key would not work. I don’t know when that switch was made, so I don’t know which one of those three options I mentioned supports the 8-cut.

Oh dear.

You need Ford Tibbie Key blank. You will find balnks everywhere as those have tendency to wear-off quite quickly, you can even get one (highly recommended) with FOB for your alarm… Immobiliser capsule can be added to your ECU or cloned from the one already programmed (10 years passed…)

The original TIBBE keys introduced in the 1990MY North American Jaguars were 8 slot, 3 cut (Full, Half and None)
The later Jaguars in the early 2000s used a 6 slot, 4 cut key.
There were 4 ‘bevels’ instead of 3 so there were more combinations available even though there were fewer ‘slots’.
