[xj-s] Leak at oil filter housing (relief flow type)

Hi there,

I have a had a leak at the oil filter housing where oil
drops on to the top of the filter. It seems to me that it is
emanating from the large nut at the rear of the filter
housing, part number EAC6400, called the ‘oil filter plug’.
I found the following advice in another post by Kirbert:

‘‘Oh, yeah, almost forgot: There’s a blank-off plug on the
oil filter head that’s notorious for leaking, too. Remove
filter to make room to get in there, remove plug, discard
cardboard washer, install new metal washer with rubber lip
around ID, reinstall.’’

I think we are talking about the same part … can anyone
confirm that for me?

If it is the same part, then the parts diagram doesn’t show
any springs or other parts within the filter body that the
plug needs to retain within the filter body (unlike for the
full flow model). So hopefully that means that it is not
too difficult to change the washer.

If anybody has experience with this I would love to hear
your advice. Can anyone tell me what size spanner I will
need? I wonder also if the washer that Kirbert describes is
the replacement washer from a Jaguar parts supplier (part
number EAC6401) or if it is an aftermarket product (size and
name???).

Hi Nicolas,

I think this might help:

In my case, although a V12 XJ and not a XJS, there was no
washers, but the plugs were glued with a thread lock
substance and was impossible to remove them in-situ…
I suggest to remove the filter housing altogether and heat
the plugs to melt the glue. It will make your life a lot
easier as there is also no space what so ever to work down
there.
There is nothing behind the plugs.

Thanks for the info Aristides. The plugs you are referring
to are different to what I was referring to but your pics
are helpful. I’m talking about the large threaded plug with
hex nut pattern that is on the right side of your picture
number 2. That pic is helpful to me in that it shows that
there does aren’t any springs or other parts that are
lurking behind that plug. What I need to now is determine
what size of spanner I need and where I can purchase a good
washer.
