[xj-s] Location of speedometer transducer

I have number 156701, 89 XJS V12 Lucas ignition Conv., Canadian
delivered. I have ordered a 5speed conversion and need to know
where the speedo transducer is located, transmission or
differential. The car is stored for the winter and I will not have
access for 4 weeks. Is anyone able to help?
Thanks in advance.–

My speedometer is working intermittently and I have researched and
found that the ‘‘speed transmitter’’ is located on the rear
differential. According to the Haynes Manual, it is located on the
rear suspension cradle. I haven’t verified that yet, but from all
that I have read, that is where it is supposed to be. This should
be true for cars from 1987 - 1991 with the same type transmitter.
Prior to that, it was located on the transmission at the same place
that the speedometer cable was attached in earlier cars.

Verification of this info would be apppreciated by me also.–

My speedometer is intermittant too.

Given the transducer is at the 3rd member, where is the transducer
for electrical signal back to a speedometer cable which goes into the
back of the speedometer at the dash.

I would like to get a confirmation of both transducers. On Jan 18, 2012, at 11:03 AM, 87XJScoupe wrote:

Up to VIN 144262 the “transducer” for the electric speedo was mounted on the
transmission. After 144262 the “speed sensor” for the electric speedo is
mounted on the differential cover itself…and works in conjunction with an
interface unit (located in the boot) to operate the speedometer

I’ve not heard of anything being mounted on a “cradle”. (?)

VIN 144262 is mid-1988 model year in USA-speak but would’ve been during
calendar year 1987

Just recently converted the instrument cluster from the old barrel type gauges to the more modern type “facelift”. . Speedometer works fine but now the odometer doesn’t … And I have replaced the entire odometer unit… What gives here???

Hello Garry - what year is the replacement unit from, and what year did you install it to - I was of the understanding that the odometer works via a signal from the speedometer that operates the gear mechanism of the odometer and also the resettable trip meter.

Kibitz:

Haynes confuses more than enlightens. Mine has n been opended for more than a decade. Hugely disapointiung.

Carl

The car is an '89 conv. The instrument cluster is from a '94 I believe… If I remember right it says DAC11116 on it…

Don’t know how to do this, but I think a lister (Lockheed?) posted something about doing the same changes on his XJS so there may be info there.
