[xj-s] Loose heat shield on downpipe cats on 95 4.0

The crimped heat shield around the downpipe cats on my 95 4.0 is
slightly loose and is rattling. I can’t see any obvious mounting
or clamping nuts etc. Is it just crimped / welded to the cats /
pipe? How is one supposed to stop it rattling? Thank you.–

On my X300, which of which the downpipe is similar, I had the
shield tacked to the down pipe. Any muffler shop with stainless
rods can do this.–

My exhaust cracked underneath the heatshield. When I had it welded,
which has held for 10,000 miles, the heatshield came of and never
went back on.

It is nice and quiet now. I don’t think the heat shield does that
much…

heat shield does exactly as the name implies,it shields the floor
pan or firewall (cowl area) from the extreme heat ranges generated
from the exhaust system. elimanation of them may or may not have
undesirable consequeses. ‘‘Given the propensity for these cars to
generate extreme temperatures is something as incidental as a
couple of welds to reattach it really worth the risk?’’

The joint at the bottom of that downpipe is a notorious weak spot. It’s a fairly crude effort to get two pipes into one with a welded join at the bottom. It’s really prone to cracking around the weld. Mine split all around and only the heat shield held the parts in place.

If your heatshield is rattling and needs attention anyway, it may be worth carefully cutting off the last 4 inches and examining the downpipe weld at at that time. After re-welding my downpipe, I just just tacked the remaining heatshield where I had cut it and left off the last 4 inches.

Good luck

Paul
