[xj-s] loud air sucking sound & pwr steering hose

Recently replaced the air filters (89 v12) and happened to start
the engine with filters & covers off, just to listen to the
engine sound. On the left side there’s a noticable loud air
sucking sound coming from the 1’’ diameter hole next to the
throttle opening. On the right side @ the matching hole, no loud
sucking sound but air is being pulled in. Engine runs fine. The
old filter on the right side was in pieces upon removal.

My question is, is this normal or is one hole sucking wrongly?

Also, I’ve noticed several of the rubber vacuum tubes fitting
loosely on their posts. That is they come off with very minimal
pulling effort. Is it best to replace all the vacuum lines or
just clip off an inch & replace…any suggestions welcome.

Also again, need to replace a leaky hi-pressure power steering
hose, any insight?–

Larry, there was considerable discussion on this subject. It’s on a Forum
entry of August 5th, under “Sucking Air.”

I’d go for new.

Dave, thanks for the info, I think I can close the book on the
unequal air vacuum sounds thanks to the ‘‘sucking air’’ thread.–
