I just bought a 1990 XJ-S and it has the Marelli ignition.
Per Kerby’s book, I am planning to modify the distributor to
avoid the A-bank shut down and potential fire. I am waiting
to get new wires and do the plugs, wires, and distrib
together, but I do worry about waiting. And then I wonder -
how many of you have actually had a problem? and how many
have actually rebuilt your cap? So, I pose the following
poll (just copy the following in your reply): (Obviously
only those with Marelli ignition should reply.)
Have you ever had the A bank cut out?
Have you modified your distributor cap?
Do you plan to? (when?)
What year is your XJ-S?
After a couple weeks, I will tally the results and post them
for anyone interested.

I have an 89 with Marelli (duh, otherwise I wouldn’t answer).
A Bank has not cut out, but since we focus on PREVENTATIVE
maintenance as well as scheduled with these jungle cats, I
do plan to make a change soon. But not with the cap, with
the rotor.–

Not my own cars, but cars I’ve seen and/or worked on (and both were
'94 XJ40 V12 which also use the marelli system).

Have you ever had the A bank cut out?
car 1 yes; car 2 holed piston A4 at 270k km (suspected marelli (cap
looked absolutely filthy) but not quite sure; poor maintenance may
have played a part as well)
Have you modified your distributor cap?
no
Do you plan to? (when?)
no, just fit new rotor/cap (in addition to fitting new piston…)
