[xj-s] Marelli Failure Modes, Cont'd

Original condition was “B” bank occasionally no spark once car warmed up.
By substitution I ruled out coils, cap and rotor and then went about trying
to find a replacement “Power Module DAC11520” Only to find out they are
verry rare and verry expensive (USD$290.!!) These are the two flat devices
mounted on the radiator support crossmember, early Marelli, mine is '92.
So, along w/ the AAV, this is one item listers want to keep an eye out for,
cuz if yours goes you are without Jag wheels for a while, and at a big
price… I’m still not certain it is the power module, but there ain’t
much else it could be. Woulda swapped the two modules to test, but the car
is still at the glass place, rock hit the windscreen in October, they just
got the glass and seals and they claim they are on the 3rd glass, claim
first 2 were defective / chipped… Ah! Jaguar!

In reply to a message from Mike McLaughlin sent Wed 1 Feb 2006:

Yes, they are frightfully expensive.

They look suspiciously like a much more common (and therefore, more
reasonably priced) Bosch module. This is a module of the same
size/shape as the Marelli, and uses seven pins with what looks like
the same connnector interfce. I started to do a little checking on
this, but never completed it. For example, take a look at Bosch
P/N 0 227 100 124. This is used on alot of cars, and has cross-ref
equivalents (common part numbers that different suppliers use for
the Bosch 124 module (or it’s exact replacements):

Bosch
0 227 100 124
1 227 010 003
1 227 010 005
1 227 010 006
1 227 010 039

Citroen
96 048 070 80

GM
90006499

Lucas
DAB 405

Magneti-Marelli
940 038 508

Opel
1208243

SAAB
750 3600

Volvo
1 332 584

Didya see the Marelli P/N in this mix? It has been used on alot of
vehicles, including: Citroen, Ford, Opel, Porsche, SAAB, Vauxhall
and Volvo. I would guess that it’s probably a suitable
replacement, but I have not tried it.

This is a so-called ‘igniter’ module, and does NOT control dwell (I
would imagine that the Marelli ECU does this). The Megasquirt site
(from which I got this info) covers this in a bit more detail,
showing the module and it’s use (pins).

For those looking through the archives on this subject, over on Facebook a gentleman gave the BIM124 unit a try based on similar post about the module in various places. Unfortunately the BIM124 module does not work out of the box. But ultimately it CAN substitute.

Like Marelli BLK3B BIM124 AKA Bosch 0 227 100 124 / 0227100124 does not control Dwell, and leaves that up to the ECM. The problem is the trigger input on the BLK3B module is on pin 6, while it’s on pin 5 for the BIM124 module. Re-pinning the Jaguar connector to fit that profile does allow the BIM124 module to produce spark with the Jag coils. Still waiting to see him fully get his engine running, but minimally the control circuit at position 6 in the Jag connector must be moved to position 5 in the connector in order to allow BIM124 to produce spark.

Where are you seeing those prices? They are freely available and way less than that in the UK - well worth looking at importing one.

Most of this post came from 2006. Prices for the Marelli unit or clones and supply could have changed since then. BIM124 modules list from Bosch at about $128, but they’re regularly sold (aftermarket?) for in the $30 range.

For those of us who remember the part-interchange section of the “old site”

http://www.jag-lovers.org/interchange/index.php

System: Ignition
Part name: Ignition Module Jaguar DAC 11520
Jaguar part#: DAC 11520 DAC 4607 D
Cross reference: VE520225
Vendor: CAMBIARE

The EXACT same ignition amp is the Cambiare module given.
The Marelli ones are NLA and show up occasionally (used) for much more.

Be sure to check out the extensive list of “similar items”.

I hope this was not a sarcasm of some type.
At one point, eBay did not have a fitment guide. And even today, when it does, it has a very long disclaimer with fine print.

was gonna buy two of those for the shelf. So far the UK and AU ebay sellers are “out of stock”. Found one.
