[xj-s] more wiring questions

Hello all,

and thanks for your help on my last question about the full
throttle switch that is mounted on the throttle pedastall. I have
taken your advice and found a very similar replacement at radio
shack for $3.

So I have finnished putting everything back together, and I have
one wire connector un-accounted for. It is one of two coming from
the cruise controll/ dump valve harness. There are two connectors
with three wires in each. (yellow, black, and yellow with black
stripe) with the two male one female type arrangement. One of
these is connected to the cruise controll bellows, and I cannot
figure out where the other one connects to. The haynes manual does
not even mention the bellows in the cruise control sections.

I also have a question reguarding the ignition wire arrangement on
the distributor. My manual is not very explicit when maping the
arrangement of the wires on the distributor. The best landmark I
can think to use is the port on the rear-left of the distributor,
where the breather hose under the left cross brace is connected.

From a top view, is this port located between the 4B and 3A wire
locations, or is it between the 3A and 2B wire locations?

Thank you everyone for your time.

Can you look on the package or invoice and let us know the Radio Shack stock
number ? It would be helpful to others

As I recall you’ll find the mating connector well rearwards towards the
firewall.

Hi Darrell,

Look on your distributor cap. You’ll notice a very slight raised “1” mark.
That’s the mark for the 1A plug wire. Start there, and work your way around
the cap. Haynes manual has a diagram that’s useful (page 116, I think?)
Otherwise, you can use the order on the label on the air cleaner cover.

The cruise control wire comes off the harness that runs along the back of
the engine, and runs up to the area of the bellows underneath the right-hand
intake manifold. Originally, this wire fed straight to the bellows.
However, Jaguar performed a recall, where they installed an electrical
device in series with the bellows to address a safety issue where the cruise
control could get stuck open. This device is simply daisy-chained between
the original harness lead and the bellows. So, the black/yellow/striped
connector goes to the device, then from the device to the bellows.

That device is light blue, and is installed by a bracket on the right-hand
valve cover.

Best of luck!

On my 85, the connector attached to the bellows has two male, one female connector, so the one coming from the Denso dump valve (at the front of the R intake?) has to be the reverse. There is a harness tied to the right fuel rail that has a two- female/one-male connector. As a side question: my 89 has the Denso dump valve with a harness going to the bellows area, ending in two connectors. My 85 does NOT have the Denso dump valve, and only has one connector at the bellows area, going to the harness tied to the right rail. Did I miss a recall?

It is between 2B & 3A (the distributor turns counter-clockwise as viewed from above). Another (easier?) way of looking at it, if your cap does NOT have a “1” beside the 1A plugwire connector: there should be a straight line from the center HT connector of the cap, through the vapor extractor hose connector, to the 1A plug connector.

In reply to a message from GBalthropXJS@aol.com sent Sun 14 Nov 2004:

hello all,

The switch that I found at radio-shack is part #2750016 on my
invoice. it is a mini lever switch. I would have rather gotten
the one with the roller, but that bin was empty, and this one(even
though it doesn’t have the roller) works fine. I did have to
extend the bracket a bit on one side to mount the switch in the
proper place, other than that it trips the switch properly.
Unfortunately, now I cannot find the two wires that are supposed to
connect to it. I believe the two green wires are connected to the
similar switch that is mounted on the throttle cable just next to
the throttle body, right? I dont have any wires visible to connect
to my new switch. Why are there two switches that do the same
thing anyhow?

I still cannot find the mate to the connector up near the cc
bellows. I will keep looking into this one though.

Thanks for the tips about the distributor, I have verified the
proper arrangement of the wires.

on another subject. neither the full load switch nor the other
cruise connector should affect whether or not the car starts,
correct?

Thanks guys for all your help,
as you can tell I am definately new at this, and I appreciate your
time.

Darrell, you worte, “I dont have any wires visible to connect to my new
switch. Why are there two switches that do the same thing anyhow?” The two
microswitches on the capstan do not do the same thing - one is for
transmission kickdown and one (your new switch) is for full fuel load
(immediate 12% enrichment by longer injector pulses) when WOT is demanded.
To find the missing wires, find the full fuel load vacuum switch (a small
blue / white cylinder around the right intake manifold) which is wired in
parallel with the full fuel load microswitch. One end of the B and W wires
connected to the full fuel load vacuum switch should terminate at female
connectors to plug into your new microswitch. The function of the full fuel
load vacuum switch is to provide the same fuel enrichment when heavy load is
put on the engine (like climbing a steep grade in high gear at low speed).
Both of the devices provide the fuel enrichment (under different load demand
circumstances) to prevent a lean condition and the potential of burning
pistons.
