I do know that the infrared thermometers are popular and
very useful…but, the metal is designed to absorb
heat…the temperature of the metal is higher than the
coolant.–

Still waiting for parts to arrive.
Like I mentioned I am doing parts directly ordered from Jaguar
classic parts in the UK so there is a wait time.
I will post a follow up as soon as the parts arrive and are in the
car–

Hang in there Dude. I have a 94 XJS 6.0L V12 2+2 Convertible
and I’m having the EXACT same problem under the same
conditions. I had my mechanic change the thermostat from 195
to 180. He said he talked to Jaguar Dealer and they said it
needed at least one of the 2 thermostats to be 195. I read
on this website that you can INSTALL A RADIATOR UPGRADE to
this engine. Something called a SINGLE PASS ALLOY UNIT. I’m
still doing research on this. Keep up the good work and stay
in touch. I can’t believe Jaguar would leave us hanging like
this.–

Are you referring to this thing:
They apparently don’t sell one that will fit my smaller inline 6.–

If that’s true, I think I’m gonna sue for royalties!

Well I finally gave up on waiting for Jaguar Heritage to come thru.
(Are they still on holiday from Prince Wiliams’ wedding?)…I went
ahead and ordered the thermostat and fan clutch from the Jaguar
dealership…I indeed noiced that the aftermarket thermostat my car
has in there now does not have the infamous ‘‘jiggle pin’’, which the
Jaguar thermostat apearantly does. I know the jiggle pin is very
important for the V12’s but I’ll see if it helps my AJ16. Should
have it Tuesday. I will still wait on Jaguar Heritage for the gauge–

Sorry V.
I hope my clutch and thermostat I ordered from the dealer
help.
Honestly I do not think you or I are actually overheating,
but for me this has become an obsession. Like I said
earlier, I doubt that a brand new Jaguar in 1995 in Texas
would be going beyond the ‘‘n’’. There is something I am
missing here.
In reply to a message from Mark Janzic sent Tue 19 Jul 2011:
Mark,
I replaced the Tstat and now the clutch.
Maybe it is a gauge problem but as I mentioned before, the
thermogun revealed that the top of the radiator was reading at 220
when the car was driven in the city with the AC on. (The needle
was past the 1/2 way point between N and H)
Last year I can’t recall seeing that needle move off of N.

My original Jaguar fan clutch and thermostat came in today.
I described them in another topic pertaining to quality of parts.
As soon as I am able to install them and drive I will post on the
effect on the gauge–

This is very frustrating because it makes me second guess myself on
the radiator…I really wanted to have it recored or replaced, but
the radiator shop said it was in perfect shape and just needed an
acid rodding.
I am going to have to do some serious research on radiators and if
they ever loose their cooling capabilities–

You’ve changed everything I could think of upstream of the
system, what about downstream?
Cat Converter? Something that would prevent the engine from
evacuating any high temps…–

Veekay;
For my sake, I MUST replace the gauge with a new one and make sure
that the ground to the cluster is 100% in top shape before moving
forward with anything else. The new gauge, some wire and connectors
plus the time to locate the instrument cluster grounding point in
the wiring diagram should all cost me less than 150 dollars.
Why don’t you guys with AJ16’s help each other out and do measurements
of (1) temp gauge sender resistance, (2) gauge position, and (3)
infrared thermometer readngs (pick one, C or F for uniformity) at the
thermostat housing where the gauge sender is located. If 3 or 4 people
did that for various housing temps from 190 to 220F, you could get some
roughly reliable data where you could tell if (1) you had a bad sender,
(2) you had a bad gauge, or (3) you were really overheating (whatever
you deem that to be).
The resistance of the temp gauge sender changes with thermostat housing
termperature, and that resistance change causes the gauge reading to
change, so knowing that data would allow Mark to determine what’s
really going on. That would be better than luck.

George;
In my case, the only two parts that are not OEM, dealer bought
brand new are 1)The gauge which is original and 2) The radiator,
which the radiator shop almost refused to recore due to its
alleged ‘‘good condition’’
I have had 3 original brand-new senders, 2 aftermarket clutches,
and now a OEM one, 4 thermostats …the list goes on and on.
Your idea is great…I do have a infrared thermostat and will be
happy to post temperatures at the thermostat housing. Veekay and
myself clearly will not have reliable data on what the temperature
is on the thermostat since we are the ones with the issue…Ideally
someone with a Aj16 that does not go over the N on any weather or
traffic conditions could share what the temperature is at ‘‘N’’ on
their car .–
