[xj-s] mystery clicking

I have completed the brakes on my 85 XJS and I now have a clicking
noise coming from the rear of the car which is only audible with
the windows up. I raised the car and put it in gear and could hear
the noise but could not find play in the universal joints all the
bolts are tight and I can not get the noise while rotating the
wheels manualy. Thanks in advance for any help.–

Do you have the dust/dirt guards/cups around the universal
joints?

One of mine was rubbing on the exhaust pipe when I would turn
just right for it to make contact, otherwise it did not rub
and make a clicking noise. I found a shiny spot on the
dust/dirt guard then found a matching shiny spot on the
exhaust pipe. After resituating the cover a few times I found
the place where it did not rub and the clicking went away.–

I did a brake job with OReilly’s ceramic pads and the
brakes clicked every time they were applied. It turned
out the pad back plates had too much play. Switched to
Wagner pads and the clicking went away.–

Interesting! I can see that happening. Most modern cars have
various forms of shims or springy things that would eliminate such
clicking, but the earlier XJ’s with inboard brakes did not. Dunno
about the later cars with outboard brakes.

My '85 Xj-S had the same noise, The Universal joint shield on
one of the axles was dislodged and was catching on the exhaust
pipe.–
