[xj-s] New Member - Few Questions on 1995 XJS

Hello,

I have a 1995 XJS convertible and need help with a few things:

(1) The ABS light is on. The ABS pressure delay valve is leaking.
I’m assuming that this would cause the light to come on?

(2) Can I simply remove & replace the ABS pressure delay valve and
then bleed the brake system and be on my way? Or is there a
different procedure for replacing this part? I definitely don’t
want to inadvertantly cause damage to the system.

(3) Will removing the battery cables for a few hours allow the dash
light to reset after I replace the ABS pressure delay valve?

(4) My cruise control is not working. Would an ABS failure prevent
cruise control operation?

(5) Another thing which may be causing the cruise control failure
is a bulb outage. The dash warning light comes on when I first
start the car, but sometimes goes out. HOWEVER, if I engage the
parking brake, the warning light will re-appear and not go out.
Which tail lights are supposed to light up when the parking brake
is engaged? Also, could this be the cause of the cruise failure?

Thanks!

Welcome Justin,

  1. Check the archives, or someone will post the procedure, for pulling the code for ABS warning lights.

Are you sure it’s the Delay Valve? More likely to be the Power Steering Reservoir leaking.

  1. Replace and bleed. No centering or other setup.

  2. Depends on what is causing the light to come on. See #1.

  3. Good question. I think not, however I need to read the manuals.

  4. The warning light seems to be working correctly. The owners manual will tell you when the light comes on. Yes, the hand brake on will turn on the warning light. Be sure the hand brake is off! The handle will be down when on just like it’s down when off.

No tail lights are on when the park brake is on.

Handbrake does not effect the cruse. Handbrake does effect the convertible top operation.

Thanks, Geoff.

I will search the archives for info. on pulling the codes.
Is a special scanner required? If so, where can one be
purchased? It is definitely the ABS pressure delay valve
that is leaking, so I’ll try replacing that first, unhooking
the battery and seeing if the problem is solved.

Will 10 pedal pumps for each wheel during bleeding be enough
to get the air out of the system after replacing the ABS
pressure delay valve, or will it require more than that?

Also - - - The warning light that comes on when I apply the
parking brake is NOT the parking brake warning light (which
comes on but is not my concern), but rather the bulb outage
failure light. I read somewhere that brake bulb failure can
cause cruise failure, so I’m wondering if this is related.
I do know that my fog lights are not coming on when I press
the button on the dash (are these rear or front fog
lights?). Any thoughts on how to proceed? If there are no
actual exterior lights that come on when the parking brake
is applied, then maybe it is just coincidence that the bulb
failure warning light comes on when the parking brake is
applied?

My hope was that there was a parking brake exterior bulb
that, when replaced, would solve the bulb failure warning
light and the cruise control.

Could all of this have anything to do with a relay or fuse?

I’ve found the fuse in the trunk and the small fuse box (5-6
fuses) under the hood, but that is it. Are there other
fuses located somewhere in this car?

Thanks!

The brake light switch on the brake pedal is known to stick in
the ‘‘on’’ position, disabling the cruise control. If you also
have a bad or poorly grounded brake light, the bulf failure
light on the dash will stay on. Try hitting the brake pedal
four or five times (make sure no one is right behind you) and
see if the cruise control will start to work.–

Thanks for the thoughts. If the brake light switch fails,
will that also cause the bulb outage light to come on? Next
time I have it out on the road, I’ll test it out.–

Regarding #4. Had same problem. replaced the cruise control
switch (left side of shifter) everything now works fine. YMMV

I think not. The cruise control modules are weak at best, well… hmmm… is this a 4.0 cyl? If so, then I don’t know (Damn I’m a poet and don’t know it.) I don’t know for certain, but typically the there’s a micro switch that’s tripped by the brake pedal that turns off the Cruise Control.

Anyway…
None of my 3 XJ-S’s or any of my XJ6’s, for that matter, have a functioning cruise control. Only the XJR-100; which is governed by the onboard computer.

Do you have an OBDII scanner? I highly recommend picking one up. The scanners aren’t that expensive and will save you a ton of time diagnosing problems. Also, pick up the shop manual at OTS publications. I really don’t like promoting these people for personal reasons, but the documentation is worth it’s weight in gold (by my estimation). between the two - a cheap OBDII scanner (that does ABS - not all do) & the Jaguar factory manual ($100.00), and you can spend from $25.00 on up for a scanner.

Some of the codes are specific to Jaguar, but the braking system I believe is pretty generic - at this point Ford owned Jaguar, so… well enough said.

I’d post the fault doagnostics, but it’s a bit lenghthy.

on the V12’s the point of failure are the Cruise control module, but mostly the bellow that sits smack dab in the top right behind the A/C compressor .
