[xj-s] No start, engine cranks should tach show rpm?

Dear all,

I have a no start problem with my 1992 4.0.
It has been about 6 months since the car was running.
It will crank fine but wont start.
Does anybody know whether I should see rpm on the tach during
cranking? I remember reading somewhere that if no rpm shows during
cranking its the CPS at fault?
