[xj-s] One of the last ones -- 6L V12 coupe -- production date 03/95

I was perusing ebay earlier today for something completely
different, when I came across item no. 171224283911

This could very well be one of the last 6L coupes in
existence. IIRC, there were only 60 coupes with V12 engine
made in 1995. Also, this one has the Teves IV ABS, as
evident from one of the supplied pictures. Being an XJS, the
ignition should still be Marelli though…

Anyhow, I was not on the market for another XJS, but this
piqued my attention big time. Seller mentioned minor paint
chips and a chip in the windshield.

I wonder if there is a forum member in the area (SoCal), who
might be able to check this car out. Looks like it’s been
well kept and taken care of.

Best regards,
Steve–

It could be the last of the V12 coupes, but not necessarily
the last of the V12 XJS’s, as there were a number of V12
convertibles built in '95 also. And as you look at the
production number(221374), it may also indicate it was not one
of the last V12 XJS’s built. The folks that have '95 V12
convertibles can chime in here.–

Alan:
No one that posts here from the limited number of 6.OL
owners has a VIN in the 200,000s, at least I have not heard
of anyone in my 3+ years on this forum.
Most of us are in the range 191,000-198,000. I am in the
196,000s.

With only 60 coupes in the last production year (the only
V12 coupe in '96, the last XJS ever is kept in a museum, I
am told), this example is truly one of the very latest.

I’d bid on it if someone from the CA folks (Ed, Paul?) can
take a look and verify that the images are not photoshoped
too much and the windshield does not need replacement right
away.
Best regards,
Steve–

My 4.0 '95 coupe’s vin is 221734 so it’s close to the coupe in
question.

How can I see the listing for the car? I’m in LA maybe I can
check it out.

That applies only to the X300 version of the saloon AFAIK
which were the only V12 to use the NipponDenso engine
management from 94.5 to the very end in 96 (97MY). I think
the XJS had Marelli to the end.

My information is in agreement with yours. No XJS V12 left
the factory with NipponDenso ignition.

Regarding the car in question, the type ignition system is not
disclosed in the ad, and the seller does not know if it has a
high-voltage distributor.
The plastic engine cover of the 6L blocks the view. I can only
see AAV on the B-bank, just like the one I have, and I am
assuming the engines/auxiliaries/electronics are the same.
Best wishes,

There’s no cam position sensor behind the timing sprocket
on A bank, ergo it’s Marelli. The ND system isn’t just a
question of different ignition. AFAIK the whole engine
management and electronic security paradigm shifted with
the X305 and therefore the ND ignition is integrated with a
lot of other stuff that wouldn’t exist or would be
different on an XJS. I assume that’s the reason they
bothered producing two separate V12 sets of ignition,
castings, harnesses etc. to the very end - it was just too
much to bring the XJS up to ND spec?

The interesting thing is that the 6.0L was rated
differently depending which car it was fitted to, even in
Marelli form. The XJ81 (93-94 XJ) had a different power
output to the contemporary XJS due to induction packaging
differences.

Here’s the item number of a late model xjs coupe that’s
appeared on UK eBay today: 141173866365

For some reason there are no registration plates on the
car but based on the wheels, the style of leather on the
seats, the wood & leather steering wheel, plus the shifter

  • I reckon this car must be a 95MY car & to say it’s been
off the road for a year & has no MOT or road tax, it
already looks like it’s going to get bid to more than it
    would be worth to me.

I bought an X305 & thought about the potential for a
transplant of the distributorless engine & ND system into
my xjs - it just looked too complex (mission creep?) + I
felt guilty at the prospect of breaking up a running X305.

The car had been off the road for up to 4 years but it
passed the MOT with minor work (the emissions were spot
on) & I sold it via flea bay for the princely sum of
1,300 which was a lot of car for the money but these cars
just aren’t worth hardly anything - such a shame.
