[xj-s] Opportunity to Learn About XJ-S on Ebay

Those photosof the underside are not bad. We really should have photos of
the undersides on the Jag-Lovers web site to serve as a reference point when
we’re discussing repairs or modifications. Maybe someone will feel up to
copying these photos there; we can also add more over time.

It has a number of pictures of the
underside of the car up on a lift. It is very rare that anyone shows
the undersides of a car.

OK all you xj-s experts out there. Here is your chance to show everyone
how much you know. How about some of you old hands analyze the 89 coupe
on Ebay for the rest of us newbies. It has a number of pictures of the
underside of the car up on a lift. It is very rare that anyone shows
the undersides of a car. What are we looking at? Leaks? Replaced
parts? Non-OEM parts? Problem areas? Signs of good/bad/nonexistent
maintenance?

It looks more like they just wanted lots of pictures (they crammed a body
panel VIN tag in there, instead of just snapping a clear shot of the more
informative tag in the driver door sill - though they got a distant shot of
the door sill anyway), I doubt they’re really posting them to be
informative about anything in particular - just saying “look at all this
car you’ll get it you eventually meet our probably outrageous reserve price!”

Yes, it is unusual for anyone to post pics of the underside, but that’s
likely got a lot to do with most sellers not having a lift to put their car
on…

What are we looking at?

Most of them should be pretty obvious - there’s several shots of the
exhaust system, the transmission pan, and the underside of the engine
(generally looking from the front of the car towards the rear). What I see
is a car which has had a quick steam cleaning that didn’t address the
details (note the front lip of the transmission pan is covered with grunge,
but the torque converter shield and the underside of the transmission pan
are clean (except that the torque converter shield has surface rust where
it isn’t painted black).

Leaks? Replaced parts?

Since the underside was quickly steam cleaned, that’ll be hard to
pinpoint. Convenient, eh?

Non-OEM parts?

The oil filter and forward shocks.

Problem areas? Signs of good/bad/nonexistent maintenance?

I don’t much care - the shop is asking US$12.5K for the car - AND it is a
RESERVE AUCTION (so US$12.5K won’t even get you the car), so it isn’t much
of a wonder that there are no bids on it yet.
