[xj-s] question about transmission warning light

In reply to a message from CJ95 sent Wed 22 Apr 2015:

‘‘I had no idea the errors were being saved.’’

Not knowing how long it has been since the memory was
cleared/flushed/purged, you don’t know if the stuff in
memory is all really current - that some mechanic forgot
(or didn’t know how) to clear it after some transmission
work might have been done. It would probably be a good idea
to clear the memory first and then drive a bit to see what
comes up as being current.–

Aaahh…that’s only about every 6 months it acts up. I
could be driving a while for that. Wait…that’s a GOOD
thing. I gotta go get started trying to trip acode!–

Steve
By any chance would you happen to know the part number for
the EPC Solenoid? I’ve been trying to find it but without
much luck

The information in this thread is just what I need to try and diagnose a fault with an XJ81 so although it’s 7 years old now I hope reviving it is ok.
Hi sbobev if the yellow factory transmission mount bush is worn and the trans moves more than it should might that cause the transmission warning light to illuminate?
Also will disconnecting the battery eliminate any stored fault codes for the transmission and if it does would grounding a lead from the A8 pin only flash code 12 on the dash?

Transmission mount being worn will cause excessive movement of the wiring against metal parts, which in turn can cause insulation to fail or the connector to make poor contacts, thus, wrong signal and limp mode.

Fixing the mount will be your first step, I reckon.

As far as fault memory being erased by disconnecting the battery - I think that’s SOP. The 36CU does the same - it also does NOT store fault codes.

Thanks for that reply Steve.
The fault I’m experiencing is the transmission warning light comes on after about a mile of driving and although it doesn’t go into a limp home mode the shifts feel a little harsher.
I have changed the transmission mount but the car is off the road for the moment waiting on an engine part so I don’t know if that will have improved things yet.
I’ll keep this thread updated with my progress.

I’ve been driving the car recently and the transmission warning light still comes on after about 5 to 10 minutes of driving, the new transmission mount doesn’t seem to have fixed the problem. I got the flash codes by grounding the wire in pin #8 of the transmission control module and they are: 68 - Transmission Component Slipping; 74 - Transmission Input Speed Sensor (TISS) Circuit; and 85 - Undefined Ratio.
Any idea what I can do to solve this issue? Thanks

Turned out to be the forward speed sensor. I replaced both. They are located on the left hand side of the transmission. There was ‘just’ enough room to remove and replace the sensors by dropping the exhaust.
