By the same token, you could rent a proper spring compressor for $5 or $10.
I bought a pair of spring compressors (ostensibly for MacPherson Strut
springs, but they worked fine for XJS rear shock replacement) for less than
$30.

For about $5 and about 15 minutes with a welder, you can build your own. I
would venture, better than some of the cheaper units I have seen. I trust
mine a lot more than I would a rented pair.
