…diagnosis is: check engine code cause is grounding, will be $500
labor and parts to fix and it is out of warranty period,
What was grounding? $500 may or may not be reasonable, depending on what they
were going to do.
…and A/C evap core is leaking, $1800 to fix that. No other options offered.
… Drive away. The check engine code is gone and doesn’t
reappear (yet) and the A/C blows cold (for now) so they did do an evacuation
and
recharge. Maybe it is me (an MG-owner-at-heart not Jaguar-owner-at-heart?) but
this “is fixed” for $132 instead of $2300.
You will find out whether it is fixed or not by how long it takes to leak down
to the same point it was when you brought it in. You can buy a lot of recharges
for $1,800. Of course the rate of leakage may change. I have a friend who
always says “The worse they get, the quicker they get worse.”
Regarding your leak with your A/C: several months ago I had a problem
with an Ag piece of equipment and I came by a site that offered a year
guarantee with their freon product against leaking if your system did
not leak at a rate that exceeded some stated rate. My memory is
somewhat hazy but I am confident your system would qualify. I have done
a brief search but am unable to locate the product and since it is the
weekend there is no need to post a question to an employee. At http://airsource.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/scstore/shophome.html?L+scstore+tcdq9838+928478767
you should be able to get some info next week. I could be in error as to
this site being the source of the product. This site has some quality
electric fans for those having heating problems. I have not had good
luck with mechanical people repairing electronic and A/C problems.
Misdiagnosis is all too frequent and at my expense. Good luck.

I would like to repeat here that if you are having heating problems you DO
NOT NEED a “quality electric” fan unless it is your electric fan that has
failed and even then I doubt that you need an electric fan at all, mine
NEVER cones on. The XJS is quite capable of cooling itself properly if set
up as stock and properly tuned.
Adding an electric fan to solve a heating problem is only hiding the
symptoms of a problem that needs to be fixed pronto.
