I need a new battery and went to a specialty store for a new Optima because
I don’t want corrosive fumes floating around the boot.

Store suggested I could use a regular battery with OOB batery oil on top of
the electrolite. Eliminates the fumes, improves performance and working
life. Saved me $100! (Canadian)

Anyone else ever use this stuff? I bought it, but now wonder if it is like
an oil additive (i.e. useless).

Hm, I definitely would have gone with the Optima. It’s not just fumes; the
Optima is a superior battery, plain and simple.
