[xj-s] Rear emblems 1986

The XJS and V12 would be attached how in 1986? My new ones have
prongs but I don’t see anywhere on the backside of the boot lid on
the old ones on the car? Are the 86 ones glued on? Or did they
not use spedd/flat nuts on the backs? Thanks–

There is a guide that includes the emblems, type and placement. The rear of the XJS had the most variance. About halfway through the guide on pages 15 and 16. Here is the link:

The early cars had metal emblems held on with tabs into plastic holders. The HE and later cars were smooth and had adhesive backing holding the emblems on.

My 1985 had plastic emblems with tabs. There were plastic
guides in the boot lid for them. I replaced the HE with a V12
and just used the double sided tape on them.–

Well, not exactly. My '83 had tabs into plastic clips in small holes
in the panel. When I replaced the “H.E.” badge with a “V-12” badge,
the stick-on V-12 badge neatly covered the holes that held the H.E.

I do wonder what auto manufacturers are thinking. The stick-on
badges are vastly superior; they don’t come off and they aren’t a
source for rust. Yet my 2004 Honda Civic LX Coupe had the Civic and
the LX stuck on but the H emblem was pinned. Hence, when I got the
car it was easy-peasy to pull off the Civic and LX badges but I had
to leave the H on there. My 2002.5 Mazda is worse, all of the badges
at the rear are pinned on so you can’t remove them without bodywork
and a repaint.

I’m also patiently waiting for car manufacturers to embrace LED’s for
brake lights. Not by making a big taillight housing with LED’s in
it, as some of them have done, but by forgetting about a taillight
housing althogether and simply sticking a sheet of LED’s onto the
bodywork and feeding a printed ribbon of conductors around the corner
of the trunk opening into the car. That should save a BUNCH of money
in fabbing bodywork and taillight assemblies, and it’d leave more
storage space inside the trunk.

They used a bunch of variations on these. My '83s have pins on the
back of the emblems that fit into holes in the lid, but they used
tape to actually hold them on. My '86 parts car (which should be
identical to yours) has no pins on the emblems, but in an
interesting twist, does have the ‘pin wells’ installed in the lid
(and painted over) and the emblems have corrosponding recesses to
fit over the protruding part, so I guess this is how they aligned
them. Again, tape is used to hold them on. My '89 is back to pins,
but no tape this time, just the pin wells. As far as I can tell,
these are all original paint/emblems cars.

There is no access from inside the lid, so you won’t find any nuts
on these.–
