[xj-s] Removing motorized antenna for fixed one

I want to remove the motorized antenna from the trunk be ause it
doesnt opperate correctly anyway so I want to replace witha fixed
antenna. Question is is that if I do that do I have to rewire the
antenna cable that goes to the radio or can I use the existing
one?–

You can use the existing one. But, why not keep it classy and
replace the factory one with an aftermarket Harada (MX22?)? Or, a
Hirschman antennna? Both reasonably priced, and readily
available. I don’t remember the model nos’, but it you do a search
of the XJS archives, you will find information there.

keywords: Search first using ‘‘Harada’’, do second search
using ‘‘Hirschman’’. No need to use a poster’s name.

I used a Harada in our '89 - it worked perfectly, and never had a
problem with it.–

And if you search for the REAL name: “Hirschmann” you get 5 times as
many hits.

Sorry Alan – couldn’t resist

Hirschmann also makes a rebuild kit for the original antenna and
well worth the effort if you want to keep the cat original.–

The part of the Hirschmann OEM antenna that usually fails (not counting
the mast which is easily available) is the circuit board.

What is included in any “rebuild kit” of which you are aware,
where/from whom can you get it, and what is its approximate cost?

Thanks,

Sorry, don’t have the part sheet any longer in my file and don’t
exactly recall all the parts included in the kit but all of the
gear wheels, pins, etc. Don’t remember if it had a replacemnt
circuit board. I had lost a pin when installing a new mast as I
had to take the antenna apart to remove a broken piece of the gear
cable that was still lodged inside. In the process I dropped a
tiny gear securing pin. Contacted Hirschmann and they sent me
sheet relating to this rebuild kit. I think it was about $35 but
might have been more. Anyway, I ended up making a replacement for
the pin I lost so didn’t order the kit. Suggest contacting
Hirschmann, directly. That is what I did at the time and they were
very helpful.–

speaking of antenna’s I finally got my radio working on the
weekend. I actually got the code from the dealer.
It sounds like a really cheap radio.
anyway as soon as I turn the radio on is the antenna supposed to
raise automatically.
How can you tell if it’s shot or whether it just needs lubrication?–
