[xj-s] replacing ps pressure hose procedure

I brought the XJS down to my mechanic to put the new ps
pressure side hose on. When they had scheduled the job
initially, they just guessed and put down an hour + - for
the job…
So yesterday when I got there Matt the son typed the job
into the computer and it showed it to be a five hour job.
So anyway we put it up on the lift just to make sure that
the hose matched. We had to reschedule for a longer time
frame. Looking at the area and talking about how to get at
the hose, Man it looked like a nightmare of a job. The hose
looked like it matched the one I bought…curved on the end
where it screws into the pump and straight where it goes
into the rack although I read in the ‘‘BOOK’’ that if the end
on the rack end is straight, it’s going to need
considerable bending?
Has anyone actually done this job? I would greatly
appreciate some guidance on the steps involved. It looks
like I’m going to have to drop the rack, removed the oil
filter, loosen the ps cooler and also looks like the big X
brace that goes from the two front corners to the to lift
points behind the front wheels needs to be removed in order
to lower the rack. HELP :>)–

I can’t really help you to do the job. I was considering it and
heard all the five hour stories. I wasn’t comfortable trying to
drop the rack or doing the work without a hoist.
I received two quotes one was for five hours the other was for
two.
My mechanic did it in two and charged $191.00. I thought I would
save myself the aggravation for that price.
I have the only XJ-S he works on but he does work on a lot of XJ-
6’s so he said it was a very similar job.
I’m not sure if it changes much since your car is a newer 6.0L
car.
I’m sure others will chime in.–

Thanks
My mechanic thought perhaps 3hrs. It’s not the hours or the
money I’m concerned with. It’s the procedure. The steps
1thru 10 or whatever. My mechanic is a good mechanic but
I’ve probably got the only Jag XJS around this neck of the
woods. He let’s me work with him which is a big plus for me
because I have input on the job plus I learn. Plus I can
point things out to him that I’ve read here and elsewhere.
I read the whole area on steering in Kirby Palms ‘‘book’’ It
did give some helpful info but no step by step instructions
for removing and replacing the hose.–

I remember mine had a bend in it, (87v12) and believe you
should have the same configuration.
I did it myself, always thankful I am a skinny little warf
rat and not a ham fisted knucke buster.
that bend is necessary to get into the rack connection AND
to get the hose over the steering cooler iirc–

I did my own about 2yrs ago. It was easy but a pain in the butt to
get the fitting on at the rack. Finally loosened the motor mount on
the same side and jacked the engine over enough to get more reach
space. I’d say it’s a 2-3 hr job. I also did all the work from the
top and didn’t take anything else apart except for the two ends of
the hose. The biggest difficulty in addition to hand and arm space
was to have a ‘thread file’. They are made for metric and std. I
could get it almost started and when the wrench was applied it would
pop out of the rack receptacle until the hose nut thread was filed
properly to get it to started by hand.

I just replaced the rack and hoses on my 89 5.3l. It was a
huge job and the hoses were the worst part. I would,
gladly, pay someone else to do it. The bend at the tower
end of the pressure hose was a big deal and had to be
positioned just so, in order for everything to fit and not
rub against the exhaust. I had the front on jacks and the
rack on a floor jack and a helper. It took a dozen tries,
before it all went together. Now, the steering is oh, so,
loose/mushy! I am going to pay to have the front end
rebuilt. Be sure to use the strong rack mount bushings.–
