[xj-s] Reversing lights

Hi List,

Another dumb question> I am trying to get my reversing lights (back-up
lights to us in the COLONIES) to work. In the console, on the front of the
shift mount is a round silver thingy that looks like a relay. It has a
green wire to one lug, and a green w/brown stripe on the other lug. Is this
the right switch? The wiring diagram in Haynes is Greek to me. If this is
the right switch, should it have 12v always on one side, and 12v on the
other only when the lever is in R? Some of you experts out there please
help out a wiring neophyte!

Thanks.

That is the one. Mine went sticky. IOW, the plunger wouldn’t move
freely, resulting in the switch operating on some occasions, and on
others not disengaging (so the reverse lights were on all the time).
Took the switch out, peeled back the peened over edge of the case, took
the innards out and cleaned it all up then reassembled. Works fine,
although new Jag switches for this function don’t cost a fortune either.

can someone confirm if the reversing lights come on if reverse gear is
selected, ign on, but engine NOT running - my lights don’t work and I’m not
prepared to work on them with the car in reverse and the engine running !

Yes , the backup lights do come on with reverse selected and ignition on
(engine not running).

BaaGAWWWK bawk bawk bawk!

OK, I checked, although I really didn’t need to; there’s no sensor
that detects that the engine is actually rotating before permitting
the reverse lights to come on. They are on when the ignition is on –
but NOT when just the ACC is on.

My car is a 5-speed, but that shouldn’t make any difference; I
connected up my reverse light switch the same way the one on the
GM400 was hooked up.
