G’day, I’ve just had the unfortunate experiance of blowing the core
of the radiator in my 1980 XJ-S. Does it sound like a good idea to
get it rebuilt as a single pass jobby or should I try to get one
out of a XJ6? Down here in Oz I don’t know of anyone making an
aluminium replacement. Cheers!!!–

First of all, what makes you think you need an aluminum radiator
core? The factory Jaguar-style cores work fine under all conditions
except maybe racing. I have my replacement Jaguar XJS radiators
custom built using a Canadian-made core with more tubes and more
fins to the inch. The fins are also louvered for better heat
dissapation. These radiators are built in the exact style as the
original radiators and overheating is most assuredly a thing of the
past.
You need to seek out a radiator repair facility that can either
purchase or build a heavy duty replacement core and just have yours
rebuilt.
This is simpler and more efficient than the alternatives. The
radiator will fit, all the hoses will connect up and you’ll be back
to driving a whole lot sooner than if you had to reengineer the
whole car. Remember to use premium anti-freeze and distilled water.
You’ll also need to replace the four foam strips around the
radiator since these have probably disintegrated long ago. Also, an
XJ6 radiator will not have the capacity to keep an XJS cool.–

I’m a bit behind with reading my e-mails and only just saw yours. V&A
Spiteri in Melbourne (phone 03 9899 4851) sell aluminium radiators for
the XJ-S. I don’t know anyone who has fitted one, but Spiteri is very
reputable independent Jaguar specialists.
I had my radiator rebuilt over a year ago by Thompsons Radiator Service
in Moorabin (03 9555 5755). It was a heavy duty core with wider tubes
(still 3 per row) and more rows per inch. It was a bit heavier than the
original, but has worked very well. No overheating problems since
fitting it.
