[xj-s] Speaker replacement/upgrade

Fist off let me start by saying that I gave searched the forums
but, found nothing relating to this.

I am wondering if anyone knows the maximum speaker sizes for the
front and rear speakers in an 89 xjs?

Ideally I would have 6.5’s in the front (i dont mind cutting into
the door pannel) however, there is only so much room before I run
into the chrome trim piece or the bottom of the door.

ideally for the rear I would try to fit 6x9’s in the little ‘‘cubby’’
space thing.

i know I can fit ATLEAST 5 1/4’s up front and ATLEAST 5x7’s in the
back however ide like to step it up and i’m juts wondering if
anyone has done this before or knows if its possible–

The original speaker size is 4"… anything past that
is pure customization. You can do anything if you are
willing to cut/screw/modify. The trim rings sandwich
the door panel between the ring and the speaker… so
if you change speaker sizes, you lose the traditional
mounting method, or you lose the ring.

I stuck with 4" in the front, Pioneers from Best Buy
($50). In the rear I used 5.5" so I didn’t have to
mess with the foam. The ring was left in place using
the original nuts, and I just mounted the speakers
with wood screws. $35 Pioneers from Walmart.

Changing the speakers alone was a decent improvement
over the 20+ year old originals and didn’t take too
long… so everyone should do this at least

A few weeks later I changed out the head unit and it
made a massive change. Again, Pioneer, $130 from
Walmart, and it has an iPod jack which made me happy.

So for about $225 you can have something MASSIVELY
better than stock. I soldered the new units wiring
harness to the old harness so the thing would plug in.
Only PITA was cutting the fascia to accept a standard
deck.

Well I would go with just some 4’’ speakers but overall it’s going
to be a pretty high-er end system I would like to get some nice 6.5
focal’s up front and some polk audio 6x9’s in the back. I’m going
to be putting about 75x4 (300 watt amp. 4-channel) watts to my
front and rears and I just dont think 4 or 5 1/4 speakers can keep
up. I dont mind cutting into the door pannel or the door itself but
i dont want to cut into the chrome trim.–

I’ve put in enough of this stuff through the years and, at the end of
the day if you want high end it’s pretty much going to require a fair
amount of fabrication.
I would like to get some nice 6.5

I’m putting 6x9’s in the back there as well and, it’s going to
require taking out the panel and, fabbing up something in order to
make it fit.

So, where are going to mount the amp? And, with all that trouble no

If your not willing to make changes then your going to be limited in
what you can or, cannot do. If you need more info contact me off list.

I replaced the front door 5’’ speakers in my 90 xjs convertible with
a pair of 5.25’’ Eclipse SC8254 for about $200. A little work with
an exacto knife. Huge magnets, but fit perfectly inside the metal
door framework. The big trick is removing the door panels. Make
sure you get print-out and check theforums. Its not terribly
difficult, but there are surprises unless you know what you are
looking for. Also, you may find that you have to beef up the press-
board backing of the door panels, as I did. The original had some
badly deterioated places which I cut out. Replaced with heavy
cardboard, fiberglass tape, and coated with resin. Plenty strong.
Speakers are kick ass and loud enough fer anybody that isn’t …
well, hearing-impaired. Digby–

Hey, if you are thinking about a subwoofer, Kenwood makes a dandy
boxed subwoofer which fits perfectly in the cubby box.( take your
width/height, and length measurements) far better than putting
something in the trunk. It rocks. Digby–
