[xj-s] Starfish Wheels-Correct Wheel Nuts?

Hi All,
I just bought a set of XJ-S Starfish wheels ('82-'88 time frame)for
use on my XJ6. I want to verify the correct wheel nuts to use on
the Starfish wheels. Is the corect part number CAC4549? The XJ6 has
Kent alloys, however, I think that the Kent alloy nuts may be
different from the Starfish nuts?

The Starfish nuts are different…longer, as I recall. But from a
functional standpoint I’ll think either type will interchange (trying to
recall my days of Starfish wheels on my own XJ6).

Worth a try at least…new nuts are stupid expensive and used ones hard to
find…

I have used both wheels on my cars over the last 15 years and they are
interchangeable. Just adhere to the torque specs (75ftlbs if my memory
serves) and you will be fine. Most of the issue is the esthetics.
If all else fails, find one authentic one and go to NAPA with the make,
model & year and buy a set. Not as expensive as the OEM ones.

Hi all,

I posted a compairison photo showing the XJS lug nuts
at:

http://www.jag-lovers.org/v.htm?1134659523

I have listed the wheels the lug nuts were used with
1960 to 1996. The thread size is the same at 1/2 inch
x 20 tpi. The diameter of the shaft going into the
wheel hole is also the same for all the alloy lug nuts
shown.

I think you have all missed the obvious difference with nuts for
the Starfish…they are a black finish and not chrome. Last time I
had a tyre replaced the fitter cross-threaded it and I had to find
a replacement. Jaguar have reorganised their part numbers and
asking the dealer what colour his nuts were got a quizical look and
a smart remark. Anyway he rang Jaguar and after a couple of weeks
managed to locate the right part. The part number you need is
JCAC4549…price last year was 10.28 + Tax. Also Jaguars entire
stock of these numbered 10 and I bought 5 of those so if you need a
full set you might have some trouble.

Hope this helps.

Dave,

The photo shows the two types of Starfish nuts. Early
Starfish nuts are coated with a thin dull black
material as if anodized, rear row left in the photo.
Late Starfish nuts are almost the same nuts with a
polished stainless cap rear row right in the photo.
Click on the photo and it will become a larger size.

Tyre fitters use high speed air wrenches to remove and
install the nuts. This will cause galling of the
thread as they are removed and installed and as the
friction heat builds up the thread material melts and
transfers to the stud or nut. Using anti seize is
imperative to prevent this. The nuts do not go on
cross threaded they get friction welded.

The original nuts and their replacements from Jaguar definetly have
a gloss black paint finish, Similar in design to those originals on
my preHE Kent Alloys when they were chromed and not a seperate over-
covers.

I steer well clear of any tyre fitters who use air guns…I also
keep a close eye on what they are going every since one company
managed to make a real mess of removing some stuck on wheel weights
(I think they must have just a hammer and chisel) and then dropped
the wheel face down on the garage floor.

Seems we have another instance of UK vs US equipment.
I would think it’s too hard (expensive) to have these
types of differences.

Thanks for the discription Dave and can you send a
photo?

I’ll see if I can get a decent photo of them, although my camera’s

All,
Thank you for the feedback! I found 20 of them, CAC4549 new, and
also ordered a new set of badges and badge retainers. I have a
little cleanup to do on the wheels, which includes removal of some
weights.
Can the weights be mounted on the rear surface so that there is a
nice finished appearance all the way around the wheel?

Gulp…

Yes. The tire shop I use always does it that way.

Mike,

wheel?

Yes, if the shop has the correct type of balancer.
That is the way I do my Jaguar alloy wheels.

A proper dynamic balance requires weights in two planes. However,
those two planes can both be on the back side. For example, you can
install one set of weights on the inner lip and another set just
behind the “spokes”, so the two planes are perhaps five inches apart.

Of course, that second set will have to be stick-on weights.
Recommendation: use stick-on weights for BOTH sets, because clip-on
weights will sometimes contact the front anti-sway bar anyway. And
stick-on don’t ding up your wheels being installed or removed.

Any shop worth a ^&%$ does all this without asking these days.
