[xj-s] Strange fix

My 1996 xjs 6cyl was hard to start today, it then cut out and
would not start, changed the cps still no start, checked ecm
connections they looked good, Then with the ignition on run I could
hear the pump relay clicking constantly, didnt have the correct
spare, it is the metal body one so put a yellow one in its place,
it also started clicking constantly, started back probing the
connection, on one wire got a steady 12volts plus, on another was
getting fluctuating voltage from 5volts to 12 volts so that
explained the relay clicking, pushed the probe into connector to
make sure I had a good connection when the voltage settled down to
a steady 12 volts, put relay back and it started the same as it
always has and the idle was nice and smooth, it was getting late
so didnt want to take it for a quick spin incase it acted up,
Just wondering if anyone has had a similar thing happen to them??
and can I put it down to a bad connection at that relay, grateful
of any feedback
Dave

Well had it out today , started ok and ran good, had a code P1607,
never had that one before, does anyone think that is related to the
voltage / relay issue?
