[xj-s] super-6 engine swap

Hello All:

I will soon be the proud owner of a '96 XJR, supercharged inline 6.
My wife insists I have a 4-door with the impending addition of our
second child to the family. I’m going to try to hold onto the XJS
as well, if I can get away with it. In the back of my mind, I can’t
help but wonder at the prospect of swapping the supercharged AJ16
engine from the XJR for the AJ6 in my XJS. Then I would have,
basically, an XJ6 and a supercharged XJS (which seems to me to be
the better combination of practicality and desire).

It strikes me that such a swap should not be overly difficult.
Does anyone have any comments as to what would be required?–

You’ll should have most of the required parts between the two cars to do the
swap. You may find that you have to change to different dashboards and you
may find you need different wiring looms (i.e. over and above swapping
everything out).

Do report back if you actually do it.

Dimensionally, the AJ6 and AJ16 engines ar close. You coluld swing
one in plaae of the other.
The biggest issues are 1) Different ECU’s. 2) Intercooler for the
supercharger.

When you take delivery of your 96 XJR, simply look at the lower
radiatoir hose and ask yourself where and how would you ‘‘plumb’’ all
of that into an XJS.–

Alternatively, you could just stick a turbo in your XJS and have fun in both

Drive the XJR for a while. My XJ6 VP is probably the most reliable car I’ve
ever owned, but the XJR is a LOT more fun to drive, and more comfortable. I
think you’ll find the combination of performance and ergonomics worth
keeping. It would probably also cost less to just turbo-charge the XJS if
it’s a 6 anyway.

I would say that is what he has done. I remember discussing a conversion he
is currently working on - a 4 litre into an 89 convertible - and he
mentioned having trouble finding a six cylinder bonnet (hood) for it. So it
follows that he would have faced the same problem with this one.

Thanks for the info. I would love to see a photo or two. I’m surprised
they could get the AJ16 into an '85 body because I thought the hood (bonnet)
sat too low. Perhaps the photos show that they swapped hoods with a
post-facelift model to get the “hump.”

By some strange coincidence, I took some photos only this morning of an 83
XJ-S with supercharged AJ16 engine fitted.

The job was done by Jagdaim in Melbourne (no association).
They reported a few problems, apparently the wiring was a nightmare and the
J-Gate shifter sits too high in the console.

I will post some photos to Jag-Lovers if any one is interested.
