[xj-s] Teves problem resolved

I finally got around to getting the replacement pressure
delay valve installed in our 94 XJS coupe. I had called
Boone of Welsh Enterprises to see if they had the correct
valve. I had bought the wrong one. The one I got is for the
later model 95 and 96 system. He was kind enough to inform
me that the delay valve for my car was used on all the
Teves systems from late 88 through 1994, including the
XJ40. I happen to have two parts cars with the earlier
Teves system and was able to pull a valve from one of them.
The brakes no longer hang up but I now have the ABS and
brake lights on. We are going to rebleed the rear brakes
and top off the reservoir. I’ll let ya’ll know how it goes.
I’ve decided that getting a couple parts cars ( actually
5 ) was a good move.
By the way, does anyone know how to take the delay vale
apart ?

We topped off the reservoir. It seems it was a little low.
Both the ABS and the brake light are now off. I took the
car for a test ride and all seems to be well. By all
evidence the problem was definitely the pressure delay
valve. I was lucky that I have parts cars and good people
to lead me in the right direction on theses matters. I have
looked around and the delay valve is expensive from all the
sources that sell them new. Welsh Enterprises may be a
source for a used delay valve, although Boone, my guy at
Welsh had not been aware of the part before our discussion.
I do have one more delay valve on another parts car but
since I have four cars with that system I am definitely
going to remove the entire ABS systems from my parts cars
for future need. Good luck to everyone else and I hope my
adventure can help you out.
Oh yeah, if anyone needs a delay valve for the later model
ABS (#MHF5818AB) I have a new one in the box that you can
have at a discount. I bought the wrong one. It will cost
more to return it than makes sense. You can contact me off
list about it.

Steve:

Can you recap your symptoms once again, that were solved by
the replacement of this valve?

And, if/when you are able to get that valve apart, if you
see the issue, please report on it here. The bit of
googling I have done on these valves has not revealed much
if anything as to why/how these fail.

Finally, your advice about finding and laying in a set of
spares for the TEVES ABS is sound advice indeed. And, up
until this most recent series of posts on TEVES, I was not
even aware of this valve…we spend so much time on the
pump/accumulator/switch and master that we generally seem
to overlook that component.

Thanks!

Mike,

The problem occurred about a week after I had gotten the
car inspected. I was on a normal drive when the rear brakes
felt like they were dragging. It didn’t seem too bad so I
took my time and drove home. By the time I got to the house
the rear brakes had worn through the inner pad and both
inner caliper pistons. The rear brakes were spewing fluid.
There was no ABS warning light on and the pedal level never
went down lower than normal. I had to replace the rotors,
calipers, pads and hoses. I flushed the fluid from the
system. the brakes continued to drag. I have driven the car
about 40 miles since my earlier posts on this thread and
the brakes seem to be fine. I am being cautious with my
optimism for a while.

I have been fortunate to have found a number of low cost
parts cars that I got for reasons other than the Teves
brake parts. You may be able to find a car close to you
that is going to be scraped or one that the owner wants
gone. I’d say that putting your information out fo people
to see may get you feed back.

Stephen,

I have a 94 XJS with the same rear brake dragging problem. Do you have the correct part number for the pressure delay valve? I also live in Pittsburgh and work at the Allegheny County Airport as a corporate pilot. I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks
