[xj-s] Tight steering and pulling to the right

Any ideas folks on why my XJ-S is pulling to the right and the
steering is vert tight. I just took it out of storage and never had
this problem before. Power steering fuild level is fine even though
I topped it up with Barr’s power steering leak fluid. The belt
looks okay.–

Hi Tony,

What is the temperature where you are today? Does the steering (rack)
seem to stick when you first turn the wheel, and does the situation
improve or even return to normal when you let the engine warm to full
operating temperature?

If the sticking condition only occurs in the first minute of operation
when cold, then a thorough flush of the old fluid, and filling with new
fluid, may well solve the problem. If the belt is not slipping and/or
the pump is not groaning, then presumably the rack is getting proper
fluid pressure, and if there is no external leak from any of the rack
fittings, then the rack tube seals are likely sticking. That may or may
not improve with use/higher temperature.

The temperature since I started to drive has only been barely above
zero. It does seem to stick when I first turn it either left or
right.–

If the power steering unit is OK, then you have only two other
possiblities. It’s either the rack or a ball joint.

Jack up the front end, and disconnect a track rod (tie rod) end.
See if the wheel swivels freely. Repeat on the other side. If
they both swivel freely, look at the rack.Has it been damaged? Try
turning the steering wheel (engine running) withe the track rods
disconnected. Is it easy or stiff?–
