[xj-s] Too much play in the steering

Any ideas how to tighten up the steering on the XJS?
I have an 89 coupe. No power steering leaks, but I have to
turn the wheel at least 6 inches before the tires turn.

It feels a bit dangerous at times…

couldn’t find any advice in Palm’s book either…–

Shot steering rack bushes. Widely covered in the book.

John,

Many moving parts there, BUT, the most common are:

The original steering rack mount bushes, which dissolve with oil
and age. Neoprene type (Nolethane in OZ) are the best fix, but some
prefer the original, your car, your choice.

The track rod ends being badly worn will cause excessive movement
before anything happens.

The small brakets that are welded to the front subframe that the
rack bolts to have been known to break away, NOT common, but it
does happen.

As Isaid, there are many other components involved, but they are
the most common from my point of view.

98% sure it the rack bushings. buy the neoprene type…under $50
for all 3. I had the same problem, The entire rack was floating.
I bet also you have a vibration at highway speed. I replaced them
myself. A straight forward job, but the pain is getting the old
pressed metal sleave ones out. I have a system/tool to do it with.
I will tell you what to get to make your own if you are going to do
it yourself.

Jim, I need to replace my rack bushings as well and I have the poly type to do the replacement. I figured I would follow Kirby’s Book and check the archives. If you have some tips I’m sure we’d all appreciate it if you share them. Appreciate it,

You must not have looked too hard.

6’’ is lot of play, even with completely worn bushes.

I think you’d best be looking at the rack itself, or the
mountings on the subframe as something sounds seriously sick.

Just be careful putting harder rack mountings in, some of
the aftermarket bushes are too hard, and cause vibration
through the steering column, over bumps. I fitted the jaguar
factory sports-pack bushes and they gave the best of both
worlds, sharp response and no steering rattle. I forget the
part numbers, but any good specialists would be able to tell
you.–
