[xj-s] Tranmission leak update

After getting underneath the car I decided that this is a job best
left to the professionals or those that love to tear everything
apart to fix something. I just happened to talk to the friendly
folks at the tranny fix it shop who wanted $1800 sans labor to
replace the transmission on my Villager. After describing the
situation they said that it sounded like the transmission cooler
line. $90. the vacuum regulator diaphram was ruled out because
the fluid leaked out not in as a bad diaphram would have sent the
fluid into the engine not all over the ground. Because the leak
was a severe flooding not a dripping the cooler line was the prime
candidate. ‘‘Have it towwed in so you do not damage the tranny any
more.’’

Took them a week but the bill was $99. Found another shop to
replace the Villager’s tranny for $600. I have my priorities.–

In reply to a message from Che sent Sat 6 Mar 2004:

I did ask them if I could just have the cooler line plugged so it
would never leak or come loose again and I was informed that I
would be getting a new transmission soon if I did that.

I also asked about installing a 5 speed manual but they said its
expensive and complicated but there were shops that did that for
quite alot of $$$ USD.–
