[xj-s] transmission fluid on the RHS cat

Noticed a white cloud behind the XJ-S while motoring today with
Wifey. Pulled over and inspected. I could see transmission fluid
dripping on the RHS cat. Hoping that this is from a loose
transmission cooler line. Last year that line was loose and leaked
on the altenator. The mechanic said it was loose on both ends.
Waiting for floor jack to thaw out as son left it out in the snow.

Details forth coming.–

Motoring with Wifey is commendable on Valentine’s day; working on HRITPUR probably is NOT unless she likes to get her hands dirty too

It you have any smoke coming out of the right side exhaust, and/or some shifting irregularities, you should investigate the possibility of a ruptured diaphragm in the transmission modulator (located externally on the right side of the trans pan.

There is a vacuum line that runs from the rear of the Right intake manifold, down to the modulator on the transmission. If the modulator fails, you pull trans fluid into the manifold and burn it, primarily on the right side, hence the smoke from that exhaust, and it may NOT upshift properly.

If the smoke is external from fluid falling on the converter, that vacuum line could also be the source (if the diaphragm is ruptured AND the tube is leaking.

If it is the modulator, that’s probably available at a regular (in the US) parts place for the GM THM400, rather than pay ~ $70 for Jaguar EAC1726.

Good luck,

In reply to a message from Che sent Sat 14 Feb 2004:

I was able to get underneath the car to investigate. The leak
appears to be from above a heat shield. I am considering two
approaches to this. One, remove the heat shield to explore and
hopefully correct the problem. Or, two, remove the console and
hope that I can reach the leak from the inside and from above.

It was suggested that I look at the transmission vacuum modulator
which is located externally. This is a $11 USD part that I
purchased at Advanced Auto after AutoZone said they did not have
one in stock. Unfortunately, this part is located behind the leak
and protected by the RHS exhaust pipes.

This link will show the photos I took of the leak, mysterious
damage to the bell housing and the transmission modulator.

Che, based on your pictures, I think you have found your problem. The front
subframe took a hell of a hit. After you replace the modulator, you may
want to have the geometry of your front end checked. Also, please buy a set
of Rino ramps and STOP using cinder blocks to suspend you car in the raise
position, particularlly if you ever plan to get under the car with them in
place. No urban legend, we lost a jag-lovers member a few years ago when a
block shattered and the car fell on him. Best wishes and be safe.
