[xj-s] Trip Computer backlights- what I learned and what I did't

After taking apart my dash to get out my trip computer. I
learned quite a few things. First, the bulbs in mine can be
removed by twisting 1/4 turn counterclockwise. I have no
idea where on might find replacements. I then modified the
bulb sockets to take LEDs and a 470 ohm resistor. I tested
it on my workbench with great success. I plugged the
connector back in, reconnected the battery, turned on the
headlights but no light. So nothing like testing for power
before I went through the trouble of replacing the
bulbs…duhhh!
So I need help as to why the power is not getting to the
trip computers back lights. The back lights on either side
behind the buttons work fine. Help!–

Might be the polarity. LEDs only work in one way.

You need a NEO5 light bulb. I got mine from
superbrightleds.com and I’ve been happy. (I ordered a NEO5
Cool White. Don’t buy the high power led, it’s too bright)
It will change the color from that aqua green to a Casio
Indiglo blue.

I offset that by cutting a piece of theater light gel
(Saffron) and it corrected the light color.–

Thanks for the info!
I ordered a few extras because they were so cheap.
I am aware of the polarity issue which is why I started
checking for power there. Nothing like assuming!
That still doesn’t help with the lack of power to the back
light for the display. I tried following the paths on the
circuit board. There must be a failed component on the board
as there is no obvious solder issues. I am considering
running a pair of wires from the other LEDs that provide the
back light to the switches. Any thoughts on that?–

I am assuming that you have the trip computer with the buttons
on the side of the trip computer, not on the bottom? DAC7362?

I would wait to see what these new bulbs do. No reason to
start mucking around if these bulbs fit and work with no
mods…–

Thanks Veekay,

You are correct on the model of the trip computer. I all
ready have been able to determine that the power to these
back lights is not making it to this board. I have been
testing with a meter and I believe I start having problems
when I reach an IC. Its possible that has failed. All of the
functions work except these back lights. Very frustrating!
Perhaps it is time to put it back and just keep a little
flashlight handy for viewing until I can replace it.–
