[xj-s] V12 will not start

OK, here is the problem. My 89 XJS was running fine, after
stopping for an appointment, I tried to start it and the
engine would only turn over. I tried over a period of about
1.5 hrs with no change. On a hunch I tried some of my
starting fluid that I used with my boat and the car started
right up and ran fine. About 2 weeks later (in the mean
while it started fine) the same thing happened only this
time it would not start in the morning but started fine that
afternoon.

Anyone out there have any ideas?–

have fuel pressure? is battery strong? how many miles on car? do
you smell gas? without any input, cant fix anything. pajtas–

Yes to all. The engine turned over just fine using the
starter, but it just would not start (not even trying).
After letting it set for about 1.5 hrs I tried it again and
no change. Gave both intakes a shot of ether (starting
fluid) and the engine immediately started and ran fine.
About a week later, same problem but this time I tried the
car again that evening and it started.

To me it sounds like the overheating sensor going bad but
have not had a chance to work that theory. I was just
hoping someone else has had the same problem and could shed
some light on the problem.

Thanks, Tom–

Tad 1,

If you had no spark, the car would not start, unless it has an
intermittent ignition problem. However, it starts with spraying
starter fluid in the intakes…so…

Suggest you focus in the fuel system…possibilities are crud in
sump tank, clogged sump tank pickup screen, fuel filter.

If no good there, check fuel pressure, check integrity of ‘‘vapor
lock’’ system beginning at the rail, and working back thru that
system.

Repost after testing.
