[xj-s] VIN code/engine code

I’ve just been and checked the Engine Block number since my car
is a 1981/1982.
It’s an XJ12 HE, engine block number is 7P45394HD the (P and D are not
clear). VIN is SAJ JBALW 3CC332453.

– 17194 – is known to have been made in JUL 1981 (Pre HE).
8S 18001 – started the HE sequence.
7P 45394 HD is mine.
– 18426 – is Pat MacNamara’s.82 HE, build date of 10/81.
– ----- – is Brodn Robert’s.

Sean has supplied me with a Vin decoding, but what does the engine number
mean ? And what do the letters mean ?
How come my engine number of 45394 is much higher than the others of
the same era.
Is it because it is an XJ12 not an XJS or has the engine been replaced ?

Regards, Mark Price 1981/1982 XJ12.

The two digits (number and letter) at the beginning are some sort of
production code identifying the basic series of the engine. These differ
between the XJS, E-type, and XJ12. The digits in the middle are the
serial, and the first of the two letters at the end identifies the
compression (H = high, S=Standard, L=Low, the specific values dependant
upon the year of the engine - Pre-HE, HE, and later engines had different
compression ratios associated with the levels), and the final letter is, at
least on XJ-S V-12 engines, the cylinder liner code – there were only two
sizes for the OD of the liner on the XJ-S (there may be more on other
engines, particularly earlier manufacture) - these were just to account for
tolerances in boring, and are not a design spec (“A” isn’t inherently
better than “B”, merely the block was determined to need “A” size liners).

It isn’t from the same sequence. XJ-S V-12 engines start with “8S”. I
don’t follow the XJ12, but I seem to recall that that engine serials are in
sequence with the E-Type. Liken it to your chassis serial not being from
the same sequence as the XJ-S.

Note also that allXJ-S V-12’s are fuel injected. Earlier XJ12 engines were
carbureated.
