[xj-s] Water in drivers footwell information for all

Hi,
Just putting this on for all to see.
The source of the water was a rust hole about 5cm round next
to the LH drain in the wiper plenum.
Full of wet leaves and crud in the corners. Sealed with
Liquid Metal. Now the water drains away properly.

Hope this helps anyone else in the future.
Regards

Nice one Gary, that is a top tip, we could do to compile a
list of all these various sources of water leaks, perhaps
‘‘the book’’ could have a few revisions?

By the way, whereabouts in the UK are you?–

When I bought my car about a year ago I could hardly lift
the carpets and sponge sound deadening mats for the weight
of the water! Front and back were affected because there is
nothing to stop water moving about the floor on either side.
There are even handy little strengthening grooves to help it
find its way! I stupidly thought it would be an easy fix but
how wrong I was! Unbelievably the car was virtually rust
free apart from the windscreen aperture which is almost
completely covered by chrome and rubber and glass of course.
A tiny little blister or two were the only give aways on the
scuttle panels and roof where they meet the rubber and
chrome surround. I thought the windscreen seal must have
gone and had a new screen fitted but this is done without
having to take the chrome work off and it is under here that
the horror is lurking! When the new windscreen failed to
make a difference I took the car to a body work specialist
who understood how we feel about our classics and didn’t
just shrug and say ‘’ It’s just a rusty old car. What do you
expect?‘’. He soon revealed the extent of the holes which
lurked beneath the trim. This car is only 15 years old so
not exactly ancient but it was a big weakness with cars of
93 to 96 vintage (I was told by Clarks XJS specialists in
Sussex, England) and one which every potential owner should
be aware of, not least because it is a structural issue. The
whole car is Galvanised and apart from this area is hard to
fault but this job, including welding and respraying all the
affected panels, is not cheap to put right. Around 2000 in
my case but it did the trick and the car was well worth the
effort after the initial shock!! The air con drains also
contribute to the flooding and need regular checking and the
door seals from the front edge of the frameless windows
downward can be a problem especially if you look down at the
top of the door where the bottom of the front of the window
triangular guide meets the forward sloping edge of the door
when shut. There was an area that water could just pour in
and run down over the door speaker covers and onwards into
the footwells. A little Blu Tac or equivalent there makes a
reasonable seal and a big difference which can be moved
around until a perfect fit is achieved then changed for a
more permanent form of filler. Sorry to go on but I love my
car now that it doesn’t stink of rotting carpets and slosh
about round corners. Well worth checking for those tiny
little bubbles around the screen area which a seller may
tell you are ‘‘nothing to worry about’’ Believe me they are
litterally the tip of the iceburg!–

Cheers Gary. Glad you enjoyed it. I have repetative strain
injury from typing it but it’s a story with a happy ending.
Everything I do to improve my XJS is really rewarding and I
can’t think of a better classic to own. Richard–
